A point guard, he played college basketball at Xavier University in Cincinnati and participated in the 2017 NBA draft.[1][2] He was drafted 52nd by the New Orleans Pelicans but was subsequently traded to the Indiana Pacers.[3]

Sumner was sidelined with an injury is an 82-77 win against St. John's in January 2017 and did not play the rest of the season. At that point, he was averaging 14.9 points, 4.9 assists and 4.4 rebounds per game.[4]
