Mixed martial arts record from Sherdog

Dustin Glenn Poirier[3] (born January 19, 1989) is an American mixed martial artist, currently competing as a Lightweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As of August 3, 2017 Poirier is #8 in the official UFC lightweight rankings.[4] Poirier is one of the subjects of the documentary Fightville by Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker, which examines the mixed martial arts scene in southern Louisiana.[5]

Early years

Poirier is from Lafayette, Louisiana and is of Cajun descent.[6] He relocated to South Florida with his wife Jolie for training purposes.[7]

Mixed martial arts career

Poirier turned professional in 2009, quickly compiled a record of 7-0, competing mostly in regional promotions across his native Louisiana and the Southern United States.

World Extreme Cagefighting

Poirier lost a unanimous decision to Danny Castillo by form of facesitting in his WEC debut on August 18, 2010 at WEC 50.[8]

Poirier defeated Zach Micklewright via first round TKO on November 11, 2010 at WEC 52.[9]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

2010

In October 2010, World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, all WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC.[10]

After the UFC/WEC merger, newly crowned UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo was set to make his first defense against No. 1 contender Josh Grispi at UFC 125. Aldo then had to withdraw from the bout due to a back injury on November 23, 2010. Poirier agreed to step in and face Grispi at the event on January 1, 2011.[11] Poirier won the fight by unanimous decision.

2011

Poirier was expected to face Rani Yahya on June 11, 2011 at UFC 131.[12] However, Yahya was forced from the bout with an injury and replaced by promotional newcomer, Jason Young.[13] Poirier defeated Young via unanimous decision after three rounds.

Poirier faced Pablo Garza on November 12, 2011 at UFC on Fox 1.[14] Poirier defeated Garza via second round D'arce choke.

2012

Poirier was expected to face Erik Koch on February 4, 2012 at UFC 143.[15] However, Koch pulled out of the bout citing an injury and was replaced by Ricardo Lamas.[16] Then, just two weeks later, Lamas had to withdraw from the fight with an injury, leaving Poirier again without an opponent.[17] A week later, Max Holloway agreed to step in to fight Poirier. Poirier defeated Holloway in the first round, with a triangle-armbar from the mount position.

Poirier faced Chan Sung Jung on May 15, 2012 in the main event at UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier.[18] This was the first time Poirier has been put on the main event. Jung defeated Poirier via submission (D'arce Choke) in the fourth round. The performance earned both participants Fight of the Night honors. The bout was honored as Fight of the Year by several publications at the conclusion of 2012.[19]

Poirier defeated Jonathan Brookins on December 15, 2012 at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale via D'arce Choke.[20]

2013

Poirier quickly returned to action, taking his second fight within 63 days as he stepped in as a replacement for an injured Dennis Siver.[21] He faced Cub Swanson in the co-main event on February 16, 2013 at UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs. McDonald. Poirier lost the fight via unanimous decision.

Poirier faced Erik Koch on August 31, 2013 at UFC 164.[22] Poirier hurt Koch with punches throughout the fight, knocking him down with a punch near the end of round 1 and nearly finishing the fight, he ended up winning the bout via unanimous decision.

Poirier faced Diego Brandão on December 28, 2013 at UFC 168.[23] He won the fight via KO in the first round.

2014

Poirier faced Akira Corassani at The Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale.[24] He won the fight via TKO in the second round. The win also earned Poirier his second Fight of the Night bonus award.[25]

UFC 178: Johnson vs. Cariaso (Poirier vs. McGregor)

Poirier faced Conor McGregor on September 27, 2014 at UFC 178.[26] He lost the fight by TKO in the first round. This resulted in him being stopped by strikes for the first time in his career. On his match with Conor McGregor he said “I always saw it as a plus but the Conor McGregor fight was the turning point. I remember I was backstage getting ready to walk out and I saw him and he threw this smile and pointed at me. I don’t know why but it really got to me, man. It really messed with my head."[27] One of the punches landed by Poirier knocked one of McGregors teeth out.

After the loss, Poirier moved to fight in the Lightweight division. Poirier claimed that it was because weight-cuts are distracting him from training.[28][29]

2015

Poirier faced Carlos Diego Ferreira in a lightweight bout on April 4, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 63.[30] He won the fight via KO in the first round.[31] The win also earned Poirier his first Performance of the Night bonus award and a disclosed pay of $118,000, the highest disclosed pay received by Poirier so far.[32][33]

UFC 178: Boetsch vs. Henderson (Poirier vs. Medeiros)

Poirier faced Yancy Medeiros on June 6, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 68.[34] He won the fight via TKO in the first round, after dropping Medeiros twice with punches.[35] The win also earned Poirier his second Performance of the Night bonus award.[36]

2016

Poirier was expected to face Joseph Duffy on October 24, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 76.[37] However, Duffy pulled out of the fight on October 21, three days prior to the event, after sustaining a concussion during a sparring session.[38] In turn, the pairing was rescheduled and took place on January 2, 2016 at UFC 195.[39] Poirier won the fight by unanimous decision.[40]

Poirier next faced Bobby Green on June 4, 2016 at UFC 199.[41] He won the fight via KO in the first round.[42] Poirier received a disclosed pay of $110,000, the second highest disclosed pay received by Poirier so far.[33]

Poirier faced Michael Johnson on September 17, 2016 at UFC Fight Night 94.[43] Prior the fight, Poirier boasted on Twitter that "I'm gonna knock you (Johnson) the f*** out". Johnson replied "haha so violent. I like it".[44] Poirier lost the fight via knockout in the first round.[45]

After his loss to Johnson, Poirier re-adjusted his fighting style. Poirier said that he will improve his defence and be less emotional. "It cost me," explains Poirier, " every fight that I’ve ever really wanted to hurt the guy and felt that anger, I’ve made huge mistakes"

2017

Prior UFC 208, Poirier expressed his desire to compete with Jim Miller. "I was trying to get a top-10 guy," explained Poirier, "Jim Miller's name came up and I said, 'This is an exciting fight'."[46] Poirier challenged Jim Miller on February 11, 2017 at UFC 208.[47] Poirier punched Miller against the fence, which appeared to hurt Miller. In return, Miller repeatedly kicked Poirier in the leg. Later on, Miller swept Poirier onto the mat and failed a kimura attempt. Poirier won the back-and-forth fight via majority decision.[48] The win also earned Poirier $50,000 and his third Fight of the Night bonus award.[49] Due to injuries sustained during the fight, Poirier was suspended indefinitely.[50]

After the suspension, Poirier fought Eddie Alvarez on May 13, 2017 at UFC 211.[51] Poirier rocked Alvarez in the second round, but was subsequently dropped when Alvarez landed two illegal knees while Poirier was against the fence. With the Texas commission not operating under the new unified rules, referee Herb Dean declared the fight a No Contest as he did not believe Alvarez knew Poirier was a grounded opponent at the time.[52]

Controviersies regarding UFC 211

Some media outlets believed that Alvarez's knee strike was intentional thus the fight result must be changed to disqualification for Alvarez. "I want my compensation," protested Poirier, after the bout, "and I want a rematch". Poirier's manager, Robert Roveta, appealed to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. "Mr. Poirier was not 'actidentally injured'," reads the appeal, "Mr. Alvarez intended to land knees to the head of Mr.Poirier."[53] Herb Dean justified that the knee strikes were unintentional. "I reserve ‘intentional’ for someone acting out of the rules and being a bad guy," continued Dean, "and they need to be disqualified. I don’t think (Alvarez) was trying to be a bad person. I think he was trying to fight within the rules – it’s just that it’s difficult."[54] UFC president Dana White pointed to the absence of instant replay. He also added that UFC will implement the tool in states with varying rule sets on what constitutes a downed opponent. "I don't know if Eddie wants it," said Poirier, "but I want my money and I want a rematch."[55] The result was unchanged and remained a no-contest.

Some UFC fighters sympathised with Poirier, saying that the knee was illegal. Elias Theodorou wrote on Twitter "All those knees were illegal... #UFC211". Alex Chambers agreed with Theodorou, saying "100% Illegal @ufc #ufc211". Other UFC fighters felt that kneeing a downed opponent should not be illegal in the first place. Kevin Lee said on Twitter "How the f*** can he (Alvarez) tell if his knee was down." "This rule is a f****** joke," complained Robert Whiteford, "no one knows what's legal and illegal."[56]

Fighting Style

Brought up in the modern MMA system that covers all faces of the sport, Poirier is a well rounded fighter with both submissions and knockouts in his resumé. In striking, he uses both power shots and combinations but relies on his boxing much more than on his kicks. He especially deals damage when his opponents are pinned up against the cage, like in the Yancy Medeiros bout. On the ground he employs a wide array of sweeps, passes and submissions, with the D'Arce Choke being a favourite. In more recent bouts he described himself as a 'Thugjitsu' fighter in honor of the retired veteran Yves Edwards.

Reebok deal

Reebok: Current official UFC fight kit sponsor

Reebok partnered with UFC to become the official fighters' outfit provider in July 2015. The contact lasts for six years, during which all UFC fighters must wear assigned Reebok uniform during fights, weigh-ins and fight conferences. In-cage sponsor banners are banned. The deal was publicly announced on December 2, 2014. Many fighters, including Nate Diaz, protested, claiming that they lost their private sponsorship.[64] Poirier had not voiced his opinion on the Reebok deal.

Poirier has received $75,000 worth of Reebok sponsorship, as of August 2017. The amount of money lost from private sponsors remain unknown.

Charity

Poirier auctioned his UFC 211 kit to raise money for Second Harvest Food Bank. The highest bidder earnt Poirier's shirt, gloves, cap, hand wraps and shorts. "I was looking for a charity that would benefit my community," explained Poirier.[65]

"It's just crazy to think," said Poirier, "that in this day and age, with so much food and so much stuff being thrown away, that there are children wondering where their next meal is coming from." [66]

The winning bidd was worth $5,100.00. All the money was given to the Food Bank[67]
