Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age[lower-alpha 1] is the eleventh main series entry in the Dragon Quest video game series, developed and published by Square Enix. The Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 versions of the game were released in Japan on July 29, 2017, with an Nintendo Switch port being released at a later date.[3] An international release is also scheduled for release sometime in 2018.

Gameplay

Dragon Quest XI continues the gameplay of previous games in the series, in which players explore worlds and fight against various monsters, including the ability to explore high areas.[4] The Nintendo 3DS version features a different style than the PlayStation 4 version, showcasing 3D graphics on the top screen and 16-bit styled sprites on the bottom screen. Before entering battle, players can also toggle between the 3D and 2D graphical styles.[5] According to Jump magazine, the split styles of 3D and 2D will not be present on both screens for the entire game, but only during the opening stages of the game; instead, players will have to select in which style to play, but will be able to switch between both styles at any time.[6] The game's battle system will be the series' traditional turn-based battle system.[7]

Development

Dragon Quest XI is under development for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo 3DS, and Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation 4 version features high definition graphics using the Unreal Engine 4 game engine.[4] Square Enix's press release for the game's announcement revealed ORCA Inc. and Toylogic Inc. would be collaborating on the development of the game.[8] In January 2016, series creator Yuji Horii stated that the story was nearly finished and that the game's intro section was playable.[9]

On April 11, 2017, Square Enix held a special presentation for the game, where the release date was announced as July 29, 2017 for the PS4 and 3DS versions of the game.[10][11] The company added that a Switch version was still being planned, but they did not have any details or release dates to announce for that version of the game.[12]

In April 2017, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Nintendo unveiled special editions of their "slim" PlayStation 4 and New Nintendo 2DS XL hardware for Japan to tie into the game.[13]

On the launch day of Japanese version, series founder Yuji Horii announced that an international version in five separate languages would be released sometime in 2018.[14]

When questioned about the Nintendo Switch release, during an interview on August 8, 2017, executive producer Yu Miyake stated the game was undergoing "technical adjustments" and that a release date could not be given yet.[15]

Reception

Dragon Quest XI sold 2.08 million units on its first two days of sale in Japan: the Nintendo 3DS version sold 1.13 million units and the PlayStation 4 version sold 0.95 million units.[16]
