Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex

On 15 October 2015,[1] Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar renamed after Dr Kalam[2] the famous Missile Complex[3] of Hyderabad. It comprises three most important laboratories - Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) primarily known for contributions to Agni Missiles, Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) famous for its contributions to IGMDP programme and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) the Missile Avionics Laboratory which was the brainchild of Dr Abdul Kalam who founded the laboratory and led as its first Director.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex[4] has made significant national contributions in Missile Systems and Technologies. Ace Defence Scientist, Dr G Satheesh Reddy is presently the Director General, Missiles & Strategic Systems[5] and spearheads the Missile Complex.

The Defence Minister, Shri Manohar Parrikar visited integration centre at Research Centre Imarat[6] and said, “There is lot of knowledge and infrastructure base with the DRDO and the same needs to be tapped by the MSME and private industries, which in turn will lead towards the establishment of a self-reliant defence industrial ecosystem in our country. Today, the industries are significantly contributing in the realization of various defence products with the know-how provided by the DRDO and few of them have even graduated as lead integrators. The partnership between the DRDO and industries is transforming our country into a global defence manufacturing hub. This synergy has provided the much needed thrust for exporting our defence products globally. We are taking necessary initiatives in this direction and I am sure that our state-of-the-art Missiles and Weapon systems will garner the much needed interest in the global markets and generate foreign exchange.”

Dr Subhash Bhamre, MoS Defence, Raksha Rajya Mantri visited Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex on 05 Jan 2017 and passed on his compliments to Missile Scientists for their efforts in making the country self-reliant in these critical areas.[7] The Missile Complex spearheads the indigenous design, development and production of diversified missile and technologies at Hyderabad. The IGMDP programme led by Dr Kalam laid the foundation stone for the success story of the Indian Missiles right from Prithvi I to Agni 5 ICBM missile.

In his memory, a statue of Dr Kalam was unveiled at Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in the presence of many of his close associates.[8]
