Douglas Darien "Doug" Walker (born November 17, 1981) is an Italian-born American actor, comedian, film critic, internet personality, reviewer, filmmaker, and illustrator, best known for and creating and portraying the character of the Nostalgia Critic[1] in the web series of the same name.
Early life
Walker was born in Naples, Italy to Barney Walker, a musician, makeup artist, and, at the time of his birth, a member of the US Navy, and Sandra Polkow Walker (1947-2016), a therapist and former opera singer.[2] Walker's grandfather, Marvin R. Polkow, was a pioneer in frozen foods, creating a pie-filling which could be frozen without the sugar crystallizing. Walker is a descendant of German composer Heinrich Schütz.[3] Due to his father's time in the navy, he and his older brother, Rob, moved to various locations around the United States, including Bothell, Washington. He studied film and communications at Northern Illinois University..
Career
While working as an illustrator, he began posting comedic film reviews to YouTube under the fictitious persona of the Nostalgia Critic, a high-strung and perpetually frustrated film critic prone to angry outbursts at even the slightest provocation. Walker's reviews proved popular, but a series of copyright strikes by 20th Century Fox and Lionsgate on his videos led him to relocate to ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com, an independent website.[4][5] Walker's success attracted other similarly-minded reviewers, and they together formed the production company Channel Awesome.[6] Walker ran the site in conjunction with webmaster Mike Michaud and his older brother Rob Walker, who also writes and produces many of its videos.
In 2012, Walker announced the Nostalgia Critic's retirement, as he and his brother felt they had taken the character as far as they could. The retirement was short-lived, however, and Walker announced the return of the beloved character in January 2013 with a short sketch video entitled "The Review Must Go On."[7] The show was revived in February of the same year in a new, bi-weekly format. In December 2015, Walker released the 300th episode of the series, a review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In 2013, he has also starred as a gun trooper in Blue Core Studios' fan film Sonic. Outside of the Nostalgia Critic, Walker has made appearances in Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie and Jesus, Bro, which were created by James Rolfe and Brad Jones respectively.
