Background

On November 3, 2005, Alternative Press announced that The Starting Line had left Geffen and was in discussion with other labels.[1] The group was aiming to have another album out by spring 2006.[1] Vasoli had written eight of a potential 12–15 for the next record.[1] The group demoed material a few months afterwards.[1] On January 3, 2006, it was announced that the band had signed to Virgin Records.[2] Virgin president Jason Flom signed the group after watching one of their live performances.[3] In February and March, the group headlined the Screaming Is for Babies tour, with support from Copeland, Gatsbys American Dream, and Cartel.[4] It was reported that the group would begin recording their next album after this tour had finished.[2] From late October to mid December, the band supported The All-American Rejects on their Tournado 2006 tour.[5]

Release

On May 3, 2007, the title track was made available for streaming.[6] "Island" was made available for streaming on May 17.[7] It was released as a single on June 19,[8] before being released to radio a week later.[9] From early July to late August, the band went on the 2007 edition of Warped Tour.[10] Direction was released on July 31. In October and November, the group went on a co-headlining US tour with Paramore. Set Your Goals opened the first half of the tour, while the Almost opened the second half.[11] The band performed a few headlining shows with the Almost in December.[12] In March and April 2008, the band went on a headlining tour across the US with support from Bayside and Four Year Strong.[13] In early April, the band appeared at the Bamboozle Left festival.[14] In early May, the band appeared at the 2008 edition of the Bamboozle festival.[15] Following this, the band went on indefinite hiatus. They explained "Imagine getting your first job when you were 15 years old and doing that exact same job for the rest of your life. ... eventually you need to stop for a minute and see what else is out there."[16]
