Commercial performance

Like the rest of the tracks from Starboy, "Die For You" charted on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 43. It reached the Top ten on the R&B Songs chart and the Top 20 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song also charted and peaked at number 35 on the Canadian Hot 100, reaching the Top 40.[3]

Rumors and Speculation

The song is speculated to be written about Tesfaye's ex-girlfriend, model Bella Hadid due to rumors that arose that the two ended their relationship near the release of the album. In an interview on Beats 1 Radio with Zane Lowe, Tesfaye admitted that the song was finished a mere week before the release of "Starboy" and that it was his hardest song to finish off the record due to its lyrical content, which further added to the speculation.[4][5]
