Deshpande

Deshpande is a surname having origins in Maharashtra. The surname is also used in Karnataka. Deshpande surname is predominantly found among Deshastha Brahmins.[1][2] It is also used as surname by some Saraswat Brahmins and CKPs. The surname dates back to medieval Deccan Sultanate and Maratha Empire era.It was a title conferred on officers responsible for record keeping at Pargana level (modern equivalent of county or district).Thechief of the pargana were called Deshmukh.[3] Their equivalent at village level were Kulkarni (accountant) and Patil (Village chief).Deshpande derives from the Marathi title dešpande.[4][5]
