Deirdre Hine
Dame Deirdre Joan Hine DBE FFPH FRCP FLSW (née Curran; born 16 September 1937)[1] is a Welsh medical doctor. In 1984 she began her career as a public health physician in Wales. She was named Chair of the Commission for Health Improvement. Since January 2004 she has chaired the BUPA Foundation.
Background
Hine was born to David Alban Curran and his wife, Noreen Mary (née Cliffe), and raised in Cardiff. She attended Heathfield House (Cardiff) and Charlton Park (Cheltenham) schools before earning her MBBCh degree at the Welsh National School of Medicine (now Cardiff University School of Medicine) in 1961. In 1963 she married Raymond Hine; the couple has two sons. She was a medical practitioner at Cardiff's Royal Infirmary. She trained in public health medicine, becoming a specialist in community medicine in 1974.

Retirement
She retired in 1997 and was appointed to the Audit Commission the following year. Hine was named as Chair of the Commission for Health Improvement (August 1999) and elected President, Royal Society of Medicine (from 2000 to 2002).

In 2001 Hine was appointed as an independent member to the House of Lords Appointments Commission.
