Declan Hannon (born 25 November 1992) is an Irish hurler who plays as a left wing-forward for the Limerick senior team.[1]
Born in Adare, County Limerick, Hannon first played competitive hurling whilst at school, winning back-to-back Harty Cup medals with Ardscoil Rís. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Limerick minor team, before later lining out with the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 2011 National Hurling League. Hannon has been a regular fixture on the team since that initial appearance, and has won one National Hurling League (Division 2) medal.
Hannon has been called up to the Munster inter-provincial team on one occasion. At club level he has won one championship medal with Adare.
Early life
Born in Adare, County Limerick, Hannon comes from a family with a strong tradition in hurling. His granduncle Pat Stakelum captained Tipperary to the All-Ireland title in 1949, the first of a "three-in-a-row" sequence of All-Irelands for Tipperary.[2]
Hannon was educated at Scoil Naomh Íosaf before later attending Ardscoil Rís. It was here that he first played under the guidance of teacher and inter-county hurler Niall Moran. He was a member of the Ardscoil Rís team that won the Harty Cup title in 2010 following a three-game series against reigning All-Ireland champions Thurles CBS.[3] He later lined out in the All-Ireland final against St. Kieran's College, in which Ardscoil Rís were beaten by 2-11 to 2-8.[4]
In 2011, Hannon was joint-captain of the Ardscoil Rís team that retained the Harty Cup title following a defeat of Charleville CBS. The subsequent All-Ireland final saw St. Kieran's take on Hannon's side for the second year in succession, however, Ardscoil Rís were once again defeated on a score line of 2-10 to 1-11.[5]
Playing career
Club
Hannon plays his club hurling with the Adare club in Limerick. By 2009 Hannon was drafted into the Adare senior team. That year he won a senior club championship title followinga 1-17 to 0-3 win over of Na Piarsaigh.[6]
Inter-county
Hannon first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Limerick minor team in 2010.[7]
After playing at colleges and underage levels, Hannon was called up to the senior team in 2011 and made his debut in the National Hurling League. Limerick defeated Clare by 4-12 to 2-13 in the Division 2 final, giving Hannon his first success in the senior grade.[8] He later made his championship debut against Wexford, scoring nine points in a 1-21 to 2-13 win.[9]
