DeKalb School of the Arts (DSA) is a public performing arts magnet school in unincorporated DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, east of the city of Atlanta. It is a part of the DeKalb County Public School System.
DeKalb School of the Arts is located at 1192 Clarendon Avenue, Avondale Estates, Georgia 30002.[1]
History
DSA began in 1985 under the direction of Richard Leitgeb and became the DeKalb Center for Performing Arts, a magnet program housed at Avondale High School. In 1999 it was split off and became the DeKalb School of the Arts.
After eight years at its independent location, DeKalb School of the Arts moved back into Avondale High School in August 2010. It was previously located on the site of the former Briarcliff High School.
DSA, which is the magnet high school for the arts, is now located in the Avondale campus two-story back building that houses the Kyle Theater.[2] DSA also utilizes some of the classrooms in the halls no longer in use by Avondale High School (300 Hallway). DSA continues to have its own administrative team.[3]
Staff
Susan McCauley is the Principal and Chief Learning Officer of DSA.[4]
Academic achievements
The school has won many awards and recognitions, including being named a National Blue Ribbon School.
Its mock trial team has consistently received four or more best attorney/witness awards at competitions and won the Regional Championship in 2013 and 2014.
