Dark Matter is a Canadian science fiction series created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, based on their comic book of the same name and developed by Prodigy Pictures in association with Space channel.[1] An order for 13 episodes was placed for the first season of the series, which premiered on June 12, 2015 on both Space and Syfy.[2][3]
Dark Matter was renewed for a 13-episode third season in September 2016, which premiered on June 9, 2017.[4][5][6]
Plot
A group of six people awaken in stasis pods with amnesia aboard a starship called the Raza. They have no memories of their identities or their lives before awakening, so they assume the names One through Six, in the order in which they left stasis. They stabilize their vessel and set about trying to determine who they are and what happened to them.[7]

Cast and characters
Main
- Marc Bendavid as One/Jace Corso/Derrick Moss (season 1; recurring season 2)[10][11] Originally believed to be mercenary Jace Corso, it turned out One was rich scion Derrick Moss, who changed his face to that of Corso's to avenge his wife's death. At the second season premiere, he was killed by the real Corso and later avenged by the rest of the crew. Another version of Corso appears when the crew of the Raza accidentally travel to an alternate reality.
- Melissa O'Neil as Two/Rebecca/Portia Lin[10] Two turned out to be an artificial human with a host of nanites that keep her alive. She was a project of Dwarf Star Technologies, until she killed them and escaped.
- Anthony Lemke as Three/Marcus Boone/Titch[10]. Three grew up happy until his parents were murdered when he was still a child, and he was taken and raised by their killers.
- Alex Mallari Jr. as Four/Ryo Tetsuda/Ryo Ishida[10] At the end of season 2, he recovers his memories and becomes the Emperor of Zairon.
- Jodelle Ferland as Five/Das/Emily Kolburn[10][12]
- Roger Cross as Six/Griffin Jones/Lt. Kal Varrick[10] In the season one finale, Six was revealed to be a Galactic Authority officer undercover in the Raza, but later he helped the crew escape prison and joined them.
- Zoie Palmer as The Android[10]/Suki/Dr. Irena Shaw
- Shaun Sipos as Devon Taltherd, a renowned surgeon haunted by his past (season 2)[13][14]
- Melanie Liburd as Nyx Harper (season 2; guest, season 3)[15]

- David Hewlett as Tabor Calchek, the Raza crew's handler and agent.[16] In season 3, Calchek is MIA.
- Jeff Teravainen as Lt. John Anders, a Galactic Authority Commander[17] and former partner of Six.
- Torri Higginson as Commander Delaney Truffault of the Mikkei Combine,[18] an occasional ally of the Raza crew.
- David Richmond-Peck as Commander Nieman of Ferrous Corp.
- Natalie Brown as Sarah, Marcus Boone's lover before he became Three.[19] Though she died of an illness in season one, in season three the Android found her consciousness had been digitally uploaded into the Raza, residing in a curtailed part of the server.
- Ellen Wong as Misaki Han, Commander of the Ishida Royal Guard, and childhood friend of Four (season 2–present)[14]
- Mike Dopud as Arax Nero, a powerful, well-connected leader of a prison gang (season 2)[14]

- Andrew Moodie as Teku Fonsei. Teku is a former teacher of Ryo, now appointed Emperor's advisor (season 3).

- Ayisha Issa as Solara, Maro's bodyguard, who also travels with the Raza crew until she leaves with Adrian (season 3).

- Ennis Esmer as Wexler, the leader of a mercenary group hired by Delaney Truffault to work with the Raza crew. Although Wexler is killed during season 1, an alternate reality version of him returns in seasons 2 and 3.[22]
- Dan Jeannotte as a genetic copy of One, who emerges when One uses a DNA transporter to follow Four to a different part of the galaxy. He has the original face of Derrick Moss, before he changed it to that of Jace Corso's.
- Jessica Sipos as Tash, a member of Wexler's mercenary group[22]. Although Tash is killed during season 1, an alternate reality version of her returns in seasons 2 and 3.
- Jon Cor as Vons, a member of Wexler's mercenary group[22]
- Conrad Pla as Cain, a member of Wexler's mercenary group[22]
- Kerr Hewitt as Sgt. Voss, a Ferrous Corp soldier who serves aboard the FCS Deliverance[23]

Production
Principal photography for the first season began in Toronto, Canada, on January 9, 2015,[26] and concluded May 20, 2015.[27]
On September 1, 2015, Syfy renewed Dark Matter for a second season. Chris Regina, Syfy’s senior VP of program strategy, said that "With its mysterious premise and fascinating characters, Dark Matter has built an incredibly loyal, passionate and engaged fan base. We look forward to another out-of-this-world season from this talented creative team."[28][29][30] Production on the second season began on December 9, 2015,[31] and concluded May 6, 2016.[32] The third season began production on November 18, 2016.[33]
Broadcast
Dark Matter premiered on Syfy in the United States on the same day as Canada.[3] Within the following week, the series premiered on Syfy Australia and Syfy UK – on June 13 and 16, 2015, respectively.[34]
Reception
Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gave a 58% approval rating, with an average rating of 4.6/10 based on reviews from 12 critics, and 88% approval from the average audience.[35] Metacritic gave the series an average score of 58 (out of 100) based on reviews from 5 critics, indicating "Mixed or average reviews".[36]
The series premiere pulled 273,000 overnight viewers on the Space channel in Canada,[37] and 1.28 million viewers for its premiere on the Syfy channel in the U.S.[38]
