Daniele Rustioni

Daniele Rustioni (born 1983 in Milan) is an Italian conductor. He is currently the Principal Conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana. In 2015, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Opéra National de Lyon and will assume that position in the 2017/2018 season.[1] He was a 2013 recipient of the Best Newcomer of the Year award at the International Opera Awards.[2]

Education

Rustioni studied piano, organ, and composition at the Milan Conservatory. He studied conducting under Gilberto Serembe at the Milan Conservatory and under Gianluigi Gelmetti at Accademia Musicale Chigiana.[3] While at the Royal Academy of Music in London, he was mentored by Gianandrea Noseda, who gave him the opportunity to make his debut as a conductor with the Orchestra of the Teatro Regio in Turin in 2007.[4] In 2009, Rustioni became an Associate Conductor of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, where he assisted Antonio Pappano.[5]

Career

Rustioni regularly conducts in Italy's major opera houses, such as Teatro Regio Torino, La Fenice, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, and is a frequent guest on various Italian television programs.[1]

In 2007, he made his first public appearance conducting Orchestra of the Teatro Regio. Rustioni made his opera debut at the age of 25 conducting Cavalleria rusticana at the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg, Russia. In October 2008, he returned to Turin to once again conduct Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana. He made his first appearance at La Scala in September 2010,[6] where he returned in October 2012 to conduct Puccini's La bohème.[6] He has since led performances of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera and Il Trovatore at La Scala.

In March 2011, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden conducting Verdi's Aida at the Royal Opera House and returned to the house in the summer 2013 to conduct Verdi's Un ballo in maschera. In the United Kingdom, he has also conducted at Opera North and Welsh National Opera where he conducted new productions of Donizetti's Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux in the fall 2013.

Rustioni made his U.S. debut in July 2011 conducting Cherubini's Medea at the Glimmerglass Festival. In March 2013, he made his debut at Washington National Opera conducting Bellini's Norma with Angela Meade in the title role.

Rustioni debuted at the Opéra National de Lyon leading a new production of Simon Boccanegra and at the Bayerische Staatsoper with Madama Butterfly in the 2013/2014 season. In the 2014/2015 season, he made debuts at the Oper Stuttgart, the Staatsoper Berlin, the Opernhaus Zürich, and the Opéra National de Lyon.

In the 2016/2017 season, Rustioni returned to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for La traviata, the Opéra National de Paris for Rigoletto, and Opernhaus Zurich for Cavalleria rusticana and Paglacci. On March 20, 2017 Rustioni made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera conducting Verdi's 'Aida', starring Krassimira Stoyanova and Violeta Urmana.[7]

Since June 2014, Rustioni has been the Principal Conductor of the Orchestra della Toscana.,[8] A frequent conductor of symphonic music, Rustioni has led the Filarmonica della Scala, Santa Cecilia Orchestra, the Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, the BBC Philharmonic, the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, the Helsinki Philharmonic, the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Montecarlo. He made his debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham, Albama in October 2015, and returned there in the 2016/2017 season.

Rustioni made his Japanese debut conducting Madama Butterfly at the Nikkikai Opera followed by his debut with the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra in 2014. In the summer 2016, he led the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra for the first time at the Gyogo Performing Arts Center. In January 2017, Rustioni returned to Japan to conduct Tosca for the Nikkikai Opera and to make his debut with the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Opéra de Lyon

In March 2015, the Opéra National de Lyon announced that Rustioni had been appointed Principal Conductor, beginning in September 2017. During his tenure, Rustioni will lead at least two productions a season and conduct concerts. Rustioni made his debut with the house in 2014 with Giuseppe Verdi's Simon Boccanegra, and returned in 2016 to conduct Halévy's La Juive. He also conducted Johann Strauss's Eine Nacht in Venedig for the New Year's Eve Gala on December 31, 2016.[5]

In his first season as Principal Conductor, Rustioni will conduct a new staging of Britten's War Requiem by Yoshi Oida for the opening night of the 2017 - 2018 starring Ekaterina Shcherbachenko, Paul Groves, and Jochen Schmeckenbecher, a concert version of Verdi's Attila with Dmitry Ulyanov, Tatiana Serjan, and Alexey Markov in November 2017, a new production of Verdi's Macbeth directed by Ivo van Hove and a new production of Verdi's Don Carlos in French directed by Christophe Honoré in March 2018. In the 2017/2018 season, Rustioni will also lead the Orchestra of the Opéra de Lyon in concerts with selections by Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, and Ravel.[9]

Recordings

Rustioni led the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus for Erwin Schrott's Opera Arias album. He signed a multi-year three recording project with Sony Classical dedicated to the works of 20th-century Italian symphonic composers. The first album, dedicated to the works of Federico Ghedini was released in September 2016.[10] The remaining two recordings will highlight the music of Goffredo Petrassi and Alfredo Casella.[1]
