Daniel George Policarpo Gutierrez (born 1964) is an Episcopal priest who became the 16th bishop to lead the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, the second oldest and fourth largest in the country. Bishop Gutierrez was consecrated as the diocese's 16th bishop on July 16, 2016 by Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry; his former boss The Rt. Rev. Michael Vono delivered the sermon.[1] Bishop Gutierrez vowed to visit each of the 132 congregations in his diocese within six months, and began blogging his pilgrimage of faith.[2]

Early life and education

Daniel Gutierrez was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and raised Roman Catholic. Some of his ancestors arrived in New Mexico as Conquistadors in 1560.[1] He received his B.A. from the University of New Mexico in 1987, and a Masters degree in Public Administration from the same university in 1992. He also has degrees in Anglican studies through the Trinity School for Ministry, and a master of theological studies degree from St. Norbert College.[3]

Career

Before his ministry, Bishop Gutierrez served as chief of staff to former Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez, as director of the Bernillo County Economic Development Department, and led a strategy and media relations firm.[3]

Bishop William Carl Frey ordained him to the diaconate on June 7, 2008 and Bishop James Robert Mathes ordained him to the priesthood on December 12, 2008. He served at the parish of Saint Michael and All Angels in Albuquerque from 2010 until 2011, when he became canon to the ordinary, chief operating office and chief of staff within the diocese.[4] He also oversaw the Navajoland area mission.[5]

On March 12, 2016, a special diocesan convention elected him to succeed the Rt.Rev. Charles Bennison, who had retired in 2012.[6] The Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel III had served as provisional bishop since 2013, and assisted in Bishop Gutierrez's consecration, as did The Rt.Rev. Barbara Harris, among others. Bishop Gutierrez has been assisted within his new diocese by the Bishops Rodney R. Michel (now retired) and Allen L. Bartlett.

Personal life

He married Suzanne Fletcher in 1991 and they have a son entering college.[3]
