"Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" is a song written, composed, recorded, and released by singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins. Released in 1992 from her debut album Tongues and Tails, it achieved success in many countries worldwide; in the United States alone, it reached No. 5 on Billboard Magazine's Hot 100 charts.

Song information

The drumbeat of the song is sampled from "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin.

The original music video for the song featured Sophie lying on her back in a flowing white outfit while singing the song, interspersed with scenes of dancers and Sophie wearing a very skimpy outfit, kneeling and moving erotically. While the video would probably be considered acceptable by modern standards, the television network MTV banned the original version for its excessive erotic content;[2] moreover, Sony Music Entertainment (SME) was still repeatedly banning it from YouTube "on copyright grounds" as of late June of 2017. A new video was shot, after the MTV ban, that showed Sophie in a complete non-erotic flannel shirt and jeans outfit, performing the song on a stage. Both versions of the video were in black and white, with some color used for artistic highlighting in the original. A portion of this original video is featured in the documentary The Cream Will Rise.[3] Both video versions used the shorter single version.
