About the village

Its name etymology is named after a small hill that is colored red and was once a small volcanic crater.

The area sits beside two previous lava flows, the east is a younger lava flow and the west is an older flow.

Its climate is about two to three degrees warmer than Achada Furna and a degree warmer than Fonte Aleixo as it is in a lower elevation than the town but higher than the Atlantic, it is a degree cooler in Dacabalaio and has the same temperatures to that of Fonte Aleixo being nearly on the same elevation.

Monte Vermelho is onnected with a lesser road that connects the Fogo Circular Road (EN1-FG01) which is 1 km north, in Dacabalaio, it sits on the Fogo Circular Road. Aluguer buses connects Achada Furna but not on a fixed schedule during 6 days of the week but not on holidays.

Agriculture like other parts of that portion of the island is the key economy of the village.

Some 2 km southeast of the village center is a lighthouse, it has a range of 16 km (9 nautical miles).[2]

History

Around 73,000 years ago, the area was formed as part of the interior of the earlier Fogo Mountain, the eastern half collapsed and with some erosion and lava flow over the centuries, it would form the current landscape.[3][4] Its earlier landscape was about 400 meters higher.

In the 2014-15 eruption, volcanic clouds partly went over the island at around 3,000-4,000 meters above sea level.
