Day6 (Hangul: 데이식스, stylized as DAY6) is a South Korean rock band formed by JYP Entertainment. The band's current line-up consists of five members: Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon. The band debuted with the release of their first EP, The Day on September 7, 2015.
History
In 2010, Young K was active under the name Brian Kang as part of a three-member group called Third Degree in Toronto, Canada. Along with members Terry He and Don Lee, he performed at several local stages and has several covers up on Terry He's YouTube channel. Along with Don Lee, Young K was contacted by JYP and auditioned, and they were accepted to be trainees. Don Lee later left JYP to pursue dentistry.
In 2012, Jae competed on the first season of SBS K-pop Star. Though he finished in sixth place in the competition overall, he later signed an exclusive contract with JYP Entertainment alongside the season's winner, Park Ji-min, and third-place finisher, Baek A-yeon.[1][2]
JYP Entertainment initially announced the group as a five-member group called 5Live, composed of Sungjin, Jae, Young K, Junhyeok, and Wonpil. The group began promotions as 5Live in 2014, appearing on the 4th episode of Mnet's reality-survival program Who is Next: WIN and releasing a song titled "Lovely Girl" for the Pretty Man OST.[3]
In mid-2015, drummer Dowoon was added to the group.[4]
DAY6 released their first EP, The Day, with the lead single "Congratulations" on September 7, 2015.[5][6]
On February 27, 2016, JYP Entertainment stated that Junhyeok had left the band due to personal reasons and terminated his contract with the company.[7] DAY6 continued as a five-member band and released their second EP, Daydream on March 30.[8]
On December 29, 2016, DAY6 announced their year-long monthly song release entitled Every Day6.[9] This would consist of two song releases on the 6th day of every month from January to December 2017. The group began promotions with "How Can I Say" from their Every DAY6 March on M! Countdown last March 9, 2017.[10] DAY6 promoted their release "I'm Serious" of Every DAY6 April on M! Countdown starting April 6, 2017, and the MV for their Every DAY6 May single, "DANCE DANCE", was released on May 8, 2017.
On June 7, 2017, they released their 1st full-length album Sunrise with their title track "반드시 웃는다 (I Smile)". This album features 14 tracks which consists of all 10 tracks that were previously released from January to May 2017 through Every Day6, tracks from Every DAY6 June, rebooted version of "Letting Go", and final version of "Congratulations".[11] On the same day, DAY6 announced their official fanclub name "My Day".[12]
