Cuban genealogy
Cuban genealogy is the study of Cuban families and researching their lineage and family history. In Spanish, genealogy is referred to as genealogía. Since Cuba was one of the most prominent Spanish colonies and one of the most significant from the New World, Cubans make up many different ethnicities, races, and cultures. Cubans make up mainly of Spaniards, bust also people from Portugal, Africa, Asia, Italy and other European countries. The Taínos, Native Indians, were also assimilated into the Cuban ethnicity. There was also a Chinese labor trade that assimilated into the Cuban culture.[1]
Due to the Cuban Revolution, many families loss records and histories of their family. This has sparked interest in Cuban Genealogy.
Clubs
Many Cuban Genealogy clubs have risen in the last 15 years. The Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami[2] has been the most prevalent. The Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami offers many resources and meetings within the Miami area. Other relating clubs include the Florida State Genealogy Society, The Genealogy Society of Greater Miami, and the Genealogy Society of Palm Beach County. Facebook Clubs have also been a big factor in Cuban Genealogy. The most popular for Cubans is the Cuban Genealogy/Genealogia Cubana (Facebook Group) [3] with over 2,600 members.
Resources and Blogs
The most extensive collection of Cuban Genealogy is Florida International University's Enrique Hurtado de Mendoza Collection of Cuban Genealogy [4] The Cuban Genealogy Club of Miami[2] also offers a directory of many resources. One of the most popular resources that include records from Europe and Cuba is CubaGenWeb.[5] Many resources and articles relating to Cuban Genealogy can also be found from FindMyCubanFamily.com,[6] a popular Cuban Genealogy source.
