Kevin Luke "Cub" Swanson (born November 2, 1983) is an American mixed martial artist. He currently competes as a featherweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As of August 7, 2017, he is #4 in the official UFC featherweight rankings,[4] and #5 Featherweight in the world by Sherdog.[5]

Early Life

Swanson was born and raised mostly in Palm Springs, California with his four siblings. He had a Swedish-American father and a Mexican mother. Swanson's father died of cancer three months after he was born. His mother grieved heavily. A distant relative adopted Swanson and his siblings until his mother healed. The adoptive family was religious. So Swanson spent most of his early life in church. Swanson was also home-schooled for most of his young life. However, when Swanson was 14, his adoptive parents divorced. Swanson had to return to his mother. He then went to Cathedral City High School, along with future boxer Timothy Bradley.[6]

As a teenager, Swanson associated himself with local gangs. Swanson participated in many streets fights. The police arrested him and two of his friends for house robbery once. As a result, Swanson was placed in a juvenile detention center. At 17 years of age, he was released. Two years later, Swanson worked for United Cerebral Palsy. He helped children with social disabilities.[2]

Before transitioning into MMA, Swanson played football. He even thought of pursuing a career in football.

UFC fighter Joe Stevenson invited Swanson to train with him. He accepted. This marked Swanson's transition into professional MMA.[7]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

2010

On October 28, WEC merged with Ultimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, most WEC fighters transitted to UFC.[19]

2011

Swanson was expected to face Erik Koch on March 3 at UFC Live: Sanchez vs. Kampmann.[20] However, Swanson pulled out of the bout due to another injury.[21]

Swanson vs. Koch was expected to take place on July 2 at UFC 132.[22] However, Swanson was forced out of the bout with another injury.[23]

After just over a year out of action, Swanson returned to face Ricardo Lamas on November 12 at UFC on Fox 1. Swanson was the last WEC fighter imported from the WEC/UFC merger to debut in the UFC.[24] He lost the fight via submission (arm triangle choke) in the second round.

2012

Cub Swanson in 2012

For his second UFC fight, Swanson faced George Roop on January 28 at UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis.[25]Prior the fight, Swanson said "I just really want to smash this kid". He boasted "I'm the more complete fighter and I have the tools to shut him down". Swanson won the fight via TKO in the second round.

Ross Pearson and Swanson went head-to-head on June 22 at UFC on FX 4.[26] In the first round, Swanson landed an inside elbow. He followed up with a cross which sent Pearson stumbling backward. Later in the fight, Swanson landed a ducking roundhouse kick to head. Pearson got two successful takedowns, both of which Swanson escaped. In the second round, Pearson caught a front kick from Swanson and pushed forward. Swanson connected with a lead hook which sent Pearson to the mat. Referee Yves Lavigne stopped the fight with 46 seconds left of the second round.[27] Swanson won the fight via TKO, earning him Knockout of the Night bonus.

Swanson fought Charles Oliveira as an underdog on September 22 at UFC 152.[28] Early in the first round, Oliveira threw a few roundhouse kick and scored a takedown. Swanson escaped from his guard and countered with haymakers. One of the haymakers hit Oliveira on the abdoman. It appeared to hurt Oliveira. Swanson then followed up with an overhand right to the temple. The strike sent Oliveira to the canvas, scoring Swanson a KO victory.[29] Swanson received a $65,000 bonus for Knockout of the Night.[30] "The only thing I get pissed off about is when I come into fights as the underdog," says Swanson, "It kind of annoys me that people think these guys are going to whoop me. I smile, train hard and win. Then people say the guys I beat were never that good to begin with. It feels like I'm being discredited for getting solid wins. I just want the credibility I feel I deserve and to get big fights".[7]

Tapology Worldwide ranked Swanson as #14 MMA Fighter of the Year for 2012.[10]

2013

Swanson was expected to face Dennis Siver on February 16 at UFC on Fuel TV: Barao vs. McDonald.[31] However, Siver pulled out of the bout. Dustin Poirier took Siver's spot.[32]

Early in the first round, Swanson tripped Poirier with a low kick. Throughout the fight, Swanson threw flying knees and high kicks, all of which were blocked. Poirier attempted several single and double leg takedowns, succeeding twice. Swanson escaped both takedowns. In the ending seconds of the third round, Swanson attempted an armbar, which failed to connect. Cub Swanson won by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27).[33]

Swanson's bout with Dennis Siver was rescheduled for July 6, 2013 at UFC 162.[34] In the first round, Swanson threw a spinning kick. Siver caught the kick and took Swanson down. The two fighters both failed to set up a submission. In round two, Swanson and Siver exchanged a few kicks. Siver took Swanson down again but Swanson escaped. The third round saw Swanson regaining control. Swanson dodged Siver's punches and countered with straights and haymakers. Siver collapsed onto the canvas. After a brief ground and pound, referee Herb Dean stopped the fight. Swanson won via TKO in the third round.[35][36] The performance earned both participants Fight of the Night honors.[37] UFC paid Swanson $108,000 (disclosed) for his performance. [10] Pay per view reached 550,000, the highest of any of Swanson's bouts.

As of March 2013, Swanson was ranked the #10 Featherweight in the world by Sherdog and ranked #5 within the UFC.

2014

Swanson challenged Jeremy Stephens on June 28 at UFC Fight Night 44.[38] The first round was mostly an exchange of kicks with Swanson having the upperhand. Swanson threw a cartwheel kick that missed Stephens. Later on, Stephens caught a kick from Swanson and took him down. The second round was won by Stephens, who attacked Swanson with his right hand. Swanson managed to land a cartwheel kick and defend Stephens' takedown. In the last three rounds, Swanson and Stephens traded haymakers and kicks, with Swanson having the edge. Stephens' nose bled from Swanson's punches. Swanson won via unanimous decision(49-46, 49-46, 48-47).[39][40] This was the first time Swanson was on a main event. The performance earned both participants Fight of the Night honors.[41] UFC gave Swanson a disclosed pay of $50,000.[10]

Swanson wanted to win more fights and prove himself before getting a title shot. "You either give it to me because I deserve it or don't," explained Swanson to MMA Junkie. "I will fight somebody again, I will keep winning... I didn't needed to beg" [42] Swanson boasted that "I want to be the guy to dethrone the legend (José Aldo)". As of September 1, 2014 Swanson is ranked #2 in official UFC featherweight rankings.[43]

Swanson next faced Frankie Edgar on November 22 at UFC Fight Night 57.[44][45] Prior the fight, UFC president Dana White promised that "If Cub Swanson wins this fight, we did tell him we would give him a title shot." “All I know is that," Swanson told Sherdog.com, "in my mind, I finish Frankie Edgar, that I’m getting that title shot. That’s all that’s on my mind.”.[46] Swanson lost the one-sided fight via submission in closing seconds of the fifth round.[47]

2015

An illustration of a guillotine choke, the choke Max Holloway used to submit Swanson

Max Holloway challenged Swanson on April 18 at UFC on Fox 15. Swanson was out-struck in the first two rounds. Holloway then set up a guillotine choke in the third round, forcing Swanson to tap out.[48] Following the fight, Swanson announced via Twitter that he had suffered serious injuries, "Well a broken jaw and a broken right hand...just another day at the office lol. I love all my fans. Thanks for your support".

The two-loss-streak made Swanson drop out as a title contender. "It's really hard to explain," said Swanson in an interview, "You want something so bad and it may come and it may not, you can go crazy doing all of that."

2016

At his #10 UFC fight, Swanson faced Hacran Dias on April 16 at UFC on Fox 19.[49] Swanson won the fight via unanimous decision.[50] UFC paid Swanson $88,000 for the win.[10]

Swanson fought professionally for the #30, facing Tatsuya Kawajiri, on August 6 at UFC Fight Night 92.[51] "I've been around forever, he's been around forever, so we're both just looking for a win," said Swanson in an interview.[52] During the fight, Swanson kneed Kawajiri to the head, which was illegal since Kawajiri was downed at the time. Referee John McCarthy paused the fight shortly but no points are deducted from Swanson. Swanson won the back and forth fight via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).[53][54]

UFC commentator Joe Rogan commented on Swanson's fight with Choi: "Amazing fight. Absolutely amazing fight. That’s a fight of the year candidate folks. Fight of the Year"

Swanson fought with touted prospect Doo Ho Choi on December 10 at UFC 206.[55] Odds for Swanson were +195, making Swanson the moderate underdog.[10] Choi landed a few solid knees on Swanson in the first round. Swanson then retaliated in the second the third round with punches and kicks. "Killer" Cub Swanson won the fight via unanimous decision.[56] Both participants were awarded Fight of the Night.[57] UFC interviewer Joe Rogan commented "Amazing fight. Absolutely amazing fight. That’s a fight of the year candidate folks. Fight of the Year." "I knew he (Choi) deserved the hype," said Swanson, "but he made a mistake calling me out. I wanted to prove to everyone that I’ve still got it. Don’t write me off again.". Choi said during the Octagon interview "This may sound a little silly, but my corner man and myself are big fans are of Cub Swanson. I believed deep in my heart I was going to win." UFC president Dana White wrote on Twitter "F*** FIGHT OF THE NIGHT this is FIGHT OF THE YEAR"."[58] Attendance reached 18,057, highest for any of Swanson's fights.[59][60]

2017

Underdog[10] Artem Lobov challenged Swanson to a fight on April 22 at UFC Fight Night 108.[61] Lobov won the first round but lost the last four. Lobov's left eyebrow got cut in the third round, which affected his vision. Swanson won the fight via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 50-45).[62][63] The fight broke the record for most significant strikes landed (209) in a UFC Featherweight bout and in a UFC Fight Night. It also came #4 in most significant strikes landed in a single bout. Subsequently, both participants were awarded $50,000 and Fight of the Night awards. This was Swanson's sixth Fight of the Night bonus. He broke his hand for the 10th time in his career.[64] Tapology.com ranked Swanson vs. Lobov as the #17 Best MMA Fight of the Year for 2017.[10]

Countries where Cub Swanson has competed in

After his victory over Lobov, Swanson campaigned for a title shot. He claimed that "I think I deserve another shot, and I think it’s the most exciting fight you can make right now". Swanson said in another interview that "I’ve never been better than I am right now...I’ve never had the opportunity (to get a title shot), and I’ve been promised multiple times and had it taken away... All I’m asking for is the opportunity".[65] The new featherweight champion, Max Holloway, responded "Cub, I fought you; you can get it again ... This is The Blessed Era. Come and get it".[66] Swanson faces competition from Frankie Edgar and Chan Sung Jung. Edgar made his case, stating "I don't see how he's (Swanson) in consideration ... I've fought nothing but top-ten, top-five guys. I don't think he's fought anyone in the top 10 and he's also lost a match (against Holloway) since then (UFC Fight Night 57)".[67] The "Korean Zombie" said "I'd like to fight Max Holloway... Outside of that, I don't really have a specific opponent in mind."[68] Dana White reported "We're looking at Frankie Edgar, " but gave no explanations as for why Edgar. Disappointed, Swanson complained "The fans know I'm the more exciting and the more deserving."[69]

Former champion Jose Aldo challenged Swanson, saying "Cub is well ranked, especially to be a challenge for me. Frankie (Edgar) will probably fight Max (Holloway), so we can fight and a new contender will emerge."[70][71][72] Swanson wrote on Twitter "I've been trying to fight Aldo for over 8 years and all of a sudden he wants to do it now."[73]

MMA Fighting style

Many MMA media outlets see Cub Swanson as one of the most entertaining fighters.[43] MMA junkie reported "Swanson's is as a man who will give you a gritty, exciting fight". Bloodyelbow.com comments "Cub's style tends to be wild, unpredictable, and very explosive". Swanson has 10 fight night bonuses for UFC/WEC featherweight bouts. This is the highest in combined divisional history.[74] MMAfighting.com calls Swanson "an exciting fighter".[75] MMA fans call Swanson's style as "Beautiful Destruction" [76][77]

"Killer Cub Swanson" is known for his creative striking. Tapology.com ranks Swanson as #109 Best MMA Striker of All Time. Many pundits cite Swanson's ducking roundhouse kick / cartwheel kick to the head as his best move.[78][76] Swanson often sets up with a left hook, then follow up with a ducking roundhouse kick to the head. This combination was used against Artem Lobov. In other cases, Swanson would throw a single ducking roundhouse kick with no set up, like in his fight with Ross Pearson and Doo Ho Choi.[77][79]

Swanson's movements is very unorthodox. He tends to feint while punching, as exemplified in WEC 52. Swanson often switches stance after kicking, something which he did against Dennis Siver. He also puts a lot of weight into his punches. Weight shifts gives him more power but shifts him off balance. This makes Swanson susceptible to take downs and counters.[80] Similarly, Swanson's stance switches make him vulnerable to leg kicks. Low kicks tend to distupt his footwork.[81]

Toughness is another highlight for Swanson. Swanson had only one TKO loss in his career. MMA junkie reported "Challenging Swanson on toughness is like accusing Shaquille O’Neal of being short"

Many sources state wrestling defence as Swanson's biggest weakness. This is seen in his fight with Chad Mendes and Frankie Edgar.

The UFC acknowledges Swanson's ground game.[2] In his fight with Doo Ho Choi and Dennis Siver, Swanson escaped from inferior positions. Despite this, 5 out of Swanson's 7 losses are by submission. This raises questions over Swanson's submission defence.[82] Swanson stated on his UFC profile that Superman double wrist lock is his favourite move. [2]Interestingly, he has never submitted any of his opponents using that move.

Influences

Swanson stated on Reddit that Bruce Lee inspired him as a fighter.[83]

Training

Swanson began training in MMA since 2003. His typical workout routine involves striking in the morning and cardio exercises in the afternoon. Grappling sessions take place at night.[2] Brazilian Jiu-jitsu medalist Rigan Machado coaches Swanson BJJ. Former boxing champion Joel Díaz teaches Swanson boxing.

Coaching

Cub Swanson owns a MMA gym, Tru MMA, in Indio, California.[43]

UFC gym partnered with Cub Swanson to open a UFC gym in Costa Mesa. Swanson taught intermediate MMA classes at the UFC GYM on May 10, 2017. Classes included Boxing, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.[84] "As a native of Southern California," remarked Swanson on the UFC website,"I look forward to bringing this community, which is both near and dear to my heart, a myriad of amazing amenities and programs to help them TRAIN different and live a healthier lifestyle."[85]

Boxing career

Prior UFC Fight Night 57, Cub Swanson said that he might transit into Boxing if he loses. "If I don’t get that (win against Edgar), who knows? Maybe I’ll do something different. Maybe I’ll go start boxing."[44][45] Swanson did not transit into boxing after the loss.

In 2017, Swanson challenged retired pro-boxer Paul Malignaggi. The fight was proposed to be the undercard of Mayweather vs. McGregor. Swanson boasted "Let Me show this former boxer what a real fighter is!" Malignaggi initially replied "I hear your boxing isn't bad though and Joel Díaz(Swanson's boxing trainer) is a good trainer so as I said, for that card only, I'd consider it." On June 17, 2017, Malignaggi changed his mind and replied "I never started training. I wish you luck but I'm out."[86][87][88][89]

Public image

Tattoos

Swanson's tattoos make him "one of the most identifiable fighters in the UFC". The largest tattoo is on Swanson's back. The tattoo shows a cross surrounded by clouds and angels. "I was raised in the church, so it has meaning to me," said Swanson in an interview, "I believe in having balance in life. Doing good things in my every day life and then being extra mean when I fight is my balance." On Swanson's abdomen are six palm trees, representing Swanson's hometown - Palm Springs. Swanson's chest is bears the writing "So Cal", which means Southern California. "Killer Cub" wanted to represent where he came from. "Not a lot of people have come from here and done big things", said Swanson. Swanson's left forearm reads "Victory is reserved ... for those willing to pay it's price". The arm tattoo "reminds me that I paid the price and I'm willing to do what it takes." Swanson also has tattoos or two skulls and roses on his right leg. The roses represent the Mexican "Day of the Dead". Swanson's head and his left leg are the only places with no tattoos.[90][91]

Trash talk

Trash-talking is a common practice in MMA, as exemplified by Nick Diaz. Swanson said that he dislikes trash-talk because "respect is a big part of the game." [92]

Despite his claim, Swanson talks down on his opponents on Twitter. He famously did this against contender Artem Lobov. "I've never liked Artem anyways lol," responded Swanson to Lobov's challenge prior UFC Fight Night 108.[93] On another instance, Swanson called Lobov "an imitator (of Conor McGregor) and have no real identity @RusHammerMMA #Weak".[94]

Supplement and gym equipment producer Onnit sponsors Cub Swanson. Onnit released a video on YouTube, "Training with MMA Fighter Cub Swanson". The video features Cub Swanson demonstrating his favourite workout routines.[101] Onnit released another video titled "Cub Swanson - We're All Fighters". In the video, Swanson discusses his troubled childhood.[102] As of 1 August, 2017, the two videos have a combined number of views of 78 thousands. Swanson said on Onnit website "The Onnit fitness system is right up my alley"[103]

Virus

Israeli clothing producer Virus has been sponsoring Swanson from 2013. Virus sells Swanson merchandise, mostly clothings. Swanson publicly thanked Virus on his Twitter account[104]

PowerBilt

PowerBilt, a golf club designing enterprise, has been sponsoring Swanson since 2013. Golf is Swanson's biggest hobby.[83] Swanson features himself in videos playing golf using PowerBilt golf clubs. "In signing Cub," said Ross Kvinge, president of PowerBilt, "other MMA athletes, and additional extreme sports figures, we are reaching younger demographics to entice them to consider PowerBilt for their golf equipment."[105]

Fear the Fighter

Clothing retailer Fear the Fighter is a popular sponsor of MMA athletes. In December 2014, a scandal broke out regarding athletes' sponsorship. Mixed Martial Artist Gegard Mousasi accused FTF for not pay his sponsorship money. Mousasi encouraged all UFC fighters to "speak up about sponsors".[106] Among the unpaid are UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping and Cub Swanson.[107] Fear the Fighter logo was shown on Swanson's walkout shirt on UFC Fight Night 44.[108] Swanson called "Fear the Fighter" "The worst company I've had to deal with personally." The debt was worth reputedly $6,000. On January 13, 2015 Swanson thanked FTF on Twitter for "sending me part of what you owed me".[109][110]

Reebok deal

Reebok: Current official UFC fight kit sponsor

Reebok partnered with UFC to become its official outfit provider. The contract began in July 2015 and lasts for six years. During this time all UFC fighters must wear assigned Reebok uniform. This applies to fights, weigh-ins and press conferences. In-cage sponsor banners are banned. The deal was publicly announced on December 2, 2014. Many fighters like Nate Diaz protested, claiming that they lost their private sponsorship.[111] Swanson is largely quite towards the Reebok deal. He announced on Twitter "Hey @Reebok when can we start working on my custom shorts?".[112] When asked what he thought about the deal, he responded "Don't know yet. We'll see when it goes in to effect."[83]

Reebok initially released a kit bearing the name "Kevin Swanson". The shirt was criticised because Swanson is commonly known as Cub, not Kevin. Media outlets condemned the Reebok production team for poor naming. Reebok apologised for the error and Kevin was changed to Cub. Swanson made no public comments regarding the error.[113] Athletes who have competed 20 or more fights for Zuffa will receive $20,000 per pay. While those who had 16 to 20 Zuffa fights will be paid $15,000 per fight.[114]

Swanson was paid $20 thousand by Reebok for Fight Night 108[115] and $15 thousand for UFC 206.[116]

Earnings

As of July 24, 2017, Cub Swanson has an estimated earning of $1,157,000 (excluding private sponsorship), putting him at 90th place at UFC fighter's earnings.[117]
