Callus shaver

Callus shaver

A callus shaver (also called credo knife) is a tool for the medical and cosmetic removal of callus, mainly on the feet (see also pedicure), but also on hands. In technical terms that means the abrasive treatment of hyperkeratotic skin lesions.

The callus shaver consists of a mostly arched handle and a blade of ceramic or metal. Because this is very sharp, injuries can occur in careless use.[1] That´s why the shaver is in some states illegal. [2] During the treatment with a callus shaver, the user has to adjust to a longer-term care. The callus is then removed several skin layers, and the treatment must be repeated several times in such a way that the affected part of the body (usually the feet) remains free of callus. However, there should be a period of a few days between the individual treatments, otherwise skin irritations and/or an even thicker callus may occur. [3]

Do not confuse the callus shaver with a foot file (foot rasp). This one ist for the after-treatment of the work with a callus shaver.

The callus shaver goes back to instruments presented by the Frenchman Nicolas-Laurent LaForest in his book published in 1782.[4] The different tools (scalpels) resembled the utensils used today.
