Extensive corruption among Kuwait's high-level government officials is a problem resulting in political tensions between the government and the public.[1]According to 2016 results of Corruption Perception Index of Transparency International, Kuwait ranks 75th place out of 176 countries.[2]
Dynamics
Kuwait's bureaucracy is often inefficient and non-transparent, and it can be biased in favour of domestic companies.[3] Public procurement process is cumbersome and susceptible to corruption, there are many ongoing investigations and trials involving government officials accused of wrongdoing in the procurement process.[4]
Anti-corruption efforts
The government has tried to reduce corruption and increase transparency in the public sector by establishing an independent anti-corruption authority and by strengthening the anti-corruption legal framework through several initiatives and efforts. No one has been convicted for bribery since the end of the Gulf War.[5]
