Compagnie Ordinaire de la Mer

In 1622, Cardinal Richelieu created, under the denomination of Compagnies ordinaires de la mer, one hundred companies which were destined to form the garrisons of the various naval vessels (French: vaisseaux de la marine). Four years later, these remaining sea companies were designated as « Régiment de La Marine » (Regiment of the Navy), for which, the Cardinal is the Mestre de camp .
