Home and Away is an Australian soap opera. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in 1998, by order of appearance. They were all introduced by the show's executive producer John Holmes. The 11th season of Home and Away began airing on the Seven Network on 12 January 1998. The first introduction of year was Will Smith, played by Zac Drayson. Several episodes later, the Nash family consisting of parents Joel and Natalie and their children Tom and Gypsy debuted. April saw the birth of Olivia Fraser-Richards. September saw the first appearance of Byron Fisher and in the same month Bec Cartwright took on the role of Will’s sister, Hayley. Scott Major guested as armed robber Murray in October. David D'Angelo arrived in November.

Will Smith

Will Smith, played by Zac Drayson, made his first on-screen appearance on 13 February 1998. Will was a regular on the show from 1998 to 2002 and continued to make frequent guest appearances until 2005. In 2010, it was announced that the character and Drayson would be returning to the show. Will returned to the Bay with his daughter on 14 October 2010. Drayson was originally cast in the role of Tom Nash, but at the last minute the show's producers thought he would be more suited to the "rougher" upcoming role of Will.[1] The character left Summer Bay after marrying Gypsy Nash (Kimberley Cooper).[2] Drayson made occasional guest appearances in the show from 2003 to 2005.[2] In September 2010, it was announced that Drayson had reprised his role of Will and would be returning to Home and Away.[3] Will was originally described as a "hot-tempered trouble maker" who arrives in the Bay to reconnect with his siblings, Hayley (Rebecca Hewitt) and Nick (Chris Egan).[4] Will learns to calm down and when he decides to leave the Bay he was, by then, considered a "good bloke".[4]

Natalie Nash

Natalie Nash, played by Angelica la Bozzetta, made her first on-screen appearance on 18 February 1998. In 1997, following Debra Lawrance's decision to quit her role as Pippa Ross producers decided to introduce a new family to run the caravan park, because the household was seen as the "centrepieice of the show".[5] They created the Nash family consisting of parents Natalie and Joel Nash, played by la Bozzetta and David Woodley respectively and children Gypsy (Kimberley Cooper) and Tom (Graeme Squires).[5] la Bozetta quit the role in late 1998 to spend more time with her daughter. Antoinette Byron was cast in the role and made her debut in the 1999 season premiere.[6] Channel 5 chose the episode where Natalie and Joel return to Summer Bay with their children, Tom and Gypsy, as one of their best episodes from the last 25 years of the serial.[7]

Joel Nash

Joel Nash, played by David Woodley made his first appearance on 18 February and departed on 11 October 2000. Prior to acting career, Woodley had worked as a federal police officer in Melbourne.[8] Before taking on the role of Joel, Woodley previously guested on the serial as Finlay Roberts' (Tina Thomsen) partner Barry, in 1996.[8]

Gypsy Nash

Gypsy Nash, played by Kimberley Cooper, debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 18 February 1998. Gypsy and departed in 2002. She returned on 9 September 2011 and departed on 13 October 2011. In 1997, after Debra Lawrance quit her role as Pippa Ross producers decided to introduce a new family to run the caravan park, because the household was seen as the "centrepiece of the show".[9] They created the Nash family consisting of Gypsy played by Cooper, sibling Tom (Graeme Squires) and their parents Natalie and Joel Nash played by Angelica la Bozzetta and David Woodley respectively.[9] The family come to Summer Bay from Hong Kong to start a new life.[9] In June 2011, it was announced that Cooper had reprised her role as Gypsy and had returned to filming in May. Cooper confirmed that Gypsy's return would be "dramatic, in true Gypsy style".[10] Gypsy returned with her daughter Lily in September 2011.[11] At the 41st Logie Awards Cooper won the "Most Popular New Female Talent" award for her portrayal of Gypsy,[12] she was the first ever recipient of the award.[13] Gypsy's kidnapping was nominated for "Most Dramatic Storyline" at the 1999 Inside Soap Awards.[14] The following year, Cooper won an award in the "Best Aussie actress" category.[15] Soap opera reporting website Holy Soap included Gypsy on their list of "Sexiest Home and Away girls ever" list.[16] They also brand her most memorable moments as; "being kidnapped and having a baby with Will Smith".[16]

Tom Nash

Tom Nash, played by Graeme Squires, made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 18 February 1998. Zac Drayson was originally cast in the role, but when the producers thought he would be more suitable for Will Smith, Squires received the part. The actor decided to leave Home and Away in early 2000 after two years[17] Tom departed on 16 May 2000.[17] and he made his screen exit on 16 May 2000. Squires returned to film the show's 3,000th episode special in 2001.[18] Zac Drayson was originally cast in the role of Tom, but the producers later thought he would be more suited to the "rougher" role of Will Smith.[1] Squires was then cast as Tom and he revealed that he was honoured to be a part of the Home and Away crew.[19] He told Jason Herbison of All About Soap that the best thing to happen to him was getting the part of Tom.[20] He explained "I had done some modelling before, but Home and Away was definitely my first big acting break. It's what people know me for and I'm very grateful that I was given the role."[20] A writer for official Home and Away website described Tom as "your typical cricket-in-summer, rugby-in-winter kind of guy; he's sporty, good-looking and a bit of a ladies' man!"[21] When asked if he shared any similarities with his character, Squires stated that they were both creative and liked the outdoors. He added that Tom is more outgoing, while he is much more quieter.[19] For his portrayal of Tom, Squires earned a nomination for Most Popular New Male Talent at the Logie Awards of 1999.[22] Robin Oliver of The Sydney Morning Herald called Tom and Gypsy "good-looking children".[23] Inside Soap's Steven Murphy said Tom and Terri's relationship was the hottest romance of the lot.[24] Claire Brand and Annette Dasey of the same publication called Tom "the darling of Summer Bay", while Soaplife's Tina Baker branded the character "tasty Tom".[25][26]

Olivia Kate Fraser Richards made her first appearance on 20 April 1998 following her birth, played by Emma Taylor and Alexandra Kotz.[27] When the character returned to the serial in 2005, she was played by Ivy Latimer.[28]

In October 2015, the character returned to Home and Away with Raechelle Banno taking over the role.[29] Olivia returned to Summer Bay in the hope that her mother's former foster carer Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger) would look after her, following some trouble at her school in London.[29] Olivia flirts with VJ Patterson (Matt Little) upon her arrival and Banno commented, "She's very forward. I think she wants his attention and she just puts herself out there."[29]

Olivia is born to Lachlan Fraser (Richard Grieve) and Chloe Richards (Kristy Wright). Shortly after her birth, she is diagnosed with a heart murmur but she recovers after a successful operation and is returned to her parents. Lachie later suffers brain damage following an operation to remove a tumour and is sent to America for treatment, leaving Chloe to raise Olivia alone. Olivia's grandmother, Diana (Kerry McGuire) begins involving herself in Olivia's life and Lachie's brother James (Michael Piccirilli), arrives to keep an eye on his family. Chloe takes Olivia to visit Lachie in America, but his personality has drastically changed and no longer has feelings for either of them and is with a new partner Dana. After James takes Olivia to a specialist to correct her narrow aorta, he and Chloe begin a relationship and later marry. The marriage later breaks down after James and Chloe clash over having more children. Lachie later dies of a second haemmorhage and Diana becomes increasingly unstable to the extent she kidnaps Olivia. Olivia's grandfather, Peter (Helmut Bakaitis) rescues Olivia and checks Diana into a clinic. Soon after, Chloe and Olivia leave Summer Bay.

Olivia returns to Summer Bay with Chloe in 2005, now using her mother's maiden name. On the evening of Alf Stewart's (Ray Meagher) 60th Birthday, Chloe is killed in a car accident, leaving Olivia orphaned. Irene Roberts, Chloe's former foster mother, decides to apply for custody but is met with opposition by Diana who returns for Chloe's funeral. After a mediation meeting goes badly and Olivia begs Irene not to let Diana take her, Irene and Olivia flee the bay with no idea of where they are going. Barry Hyde (Ivar Kants) encourages Irene to return and she does. After Judith Lane (Jane Fullerton), the mediator talks to Olivia, she awards Diana custody and she takes Olivia home. Olivia phones Irene for help and tells her she does not want to live with Diana. Irene visits but is threatened with the police.[30] However, James returns from the United Kingdom and Olivia is thrilled to see him. He tells Diana and Irene that Chloe named him the executor of her will and that everything was left to Olivia. James is also named as her legal guardian. Olivia tells Diana she does not want to live with her as she always causes trouble for everyone. James tells Olivia that they will be living in Chloe's old flat in order for her to attend the same school and they both bid Irene farewell before leaving. They subsequently return to the UK.[31]

Ten years later, Olivia returns to the Bay. VJ Patterson finds her lying on his beach towel and she tells him she thought it would be fun if they spent time together. They steal a couple of bikes to explore the area. Later that evening, Olivia goes to the diner to see Irene and asks if she can live with her. Olivia tells Irene that she got suspended from school and James threatened to send her to a boarding school, but he then sent her to Summer Bay. Irene later learns Olivia is lying when James informs her that Olivia stole his credit card to buy herself a plane ticket. Irene lets Olivia stay with her for a few weeks. Olivia and VJ take his mother's car for a joy ride and it gets scratched, resulting in Olivia being sent to work in The Diner. Olivia befriends Hunter King (Scott Lee), which makes VJ jealous. When she witnesses Hunter's mother Charlotte (Erika Heynatz) being aggressive towards Irene, Olivia stands up to her. Charlotte later threatens Olivia, so she throws garbage around Charlotte's flat. Olivia is then questioned by the police about the vandalism. Hunter notices scars on Olivia's legs and tells VJ, who tries to talk to Olivia, but she shuts him down. When Irene finds out, Olivia opens up to her about her self-harming and that she was sexually abused by one of James's friends. Irene later admits that she was sexually abused by her uncle and agrees to get counselling with Olivia.

Olivia notices Irene is drinking and tells Leah Patterson-Baker (Ada Nicodemou), as Irene is an alcoholic. Irene lashes out at Olivia when she believes Irene is not coping. Olivia and Hunter develop feelings for one another. They almost kiss, but when Hunter accidentally touches her scars, he walks out. He later tells her that he does not want to make her feel uncomfortable and that her scars are not ugly. They kiss and later consummate their relationship. Olivia feels uncomfortable as it reminds her of the abuse she has suffered. After Charlotte is accused of murder, Hunter decides to leave the Bay. Olivia fails to change his mind. Olivia told Irene, Zac and Leah that Hunter left the Bay. Soon, Hunter returns and Olivia comforts him while he grieves for Charlotte's death. Olivia began to dislike Skye Peters (Marlo Kelly) after she moves in the Beach House after John Palmer (Shane Withington) left her with Irene's care so he could go to Italy to look after his injured wife, Marilyn Chambers (Emily Symons. Olivia began to bad mouthing Skye to Hunter, unaware that Skye heard her. Olivia apologizes to Skye and Skye forgives, and began a friendship. Olivia meets Lindsay Ford (Georgia Flood), the woman who drove Hunter from the Bay, who came to see Hunter. Olivia was shocked when Lindsay revealed that she and Hunter had an affair. Olivia breaks up with Hunter and became enemies with Lindsay. When Lindsay annoyed Olivia at the Diner, Olivia lost her temper and attempts to slap Lindsay, but VJ and Skye stopped her. When Lindsay stole Alf's ute for a joyride, with Hunter trying to stop her, Lindsay lost control of the ute, and left Hunter in a serious condition.

With Hunter stabled, Olivia threatens Lindsay to leave the Bay or she'll call the cops on her, and Lindsay left for good. Hunter apologized to Olivia and the two got back together. Olivia organised a romantic picnic with Hunter, but the date went into a disaster when Hunter had trouble of breathing and Olivia rushes find help and found Zac and Greg Snelgrove (Paul Gleeson) driving on the road. She led them to Hunter and Zac saves Hunter and was taken to hospital. Olivia found out she's pregnant with Hunter's child, but didn't tell Hunter. But Olivia told Skye and Irene, who convince her to tell Hunter. Olivia finally tells Hunter about her pregnancy and he walks out. But the two talked again and decided not to keep the baby, and Olivia had an abortion. After the abortion, Olivia started to cut herself again and Chris Harrington (Johnny Ruffo) stays by her side. Olivia noticed that Irene has been gone a few days and tried to call or text her. Olivia attends to Hunter's cousin, Oscar MacGuire (Jake Speer) and Oscar's aunt, Hannah Wilson's (Cassie Howarth) funeral and at the wake, Skye told Olivia and Hunter that her boyfriend, Tank Snelgrove (Reece Milne) has caused the caravan explosion that killed Oscar and Hannah. Olivia found out from Leah that Irene has gone to find her long lost child. Olivia was upset when Skye left the Bay to be with Tank. After Skye left, Olivia began to dislike VJ's new, pregnant girlfriend, Billie Ashford (Tessa de Josselin), who is 6-years older than VJ. Olivia was rude to Billie and VJ and Hunter tells Olivia to say sorry. Olivia apologized to Billie and the two girls make peace and watched a movie together with VJ and Hunter.

Olivia gets a call from Irene, but call was hung up and Olivia receives a text from Irene, and was Olivia became suspicious when Irene's text called her Oli, which Irene never calls her that. A week later, Olivia receives another text from Irene and was shocked of the text, of a picture of Irene being held hostage, and shows it to Chris, and the two realised that Irene wasn't looking for her child, but was kidnapped. Immediately, Olivia and Chris showed the photo to Kat and the police began their search. On the same night, at the Diner, Olivia receives a video on text from Irene's kidnapper, which is a video of a scared Irene, held hostage and begging her kidnapper to let her go. Irene's kidnapper, Mick Jennings followed Olivia and tries to kidnap her,by telling her to get in his car, or she'll never see Irene again. Olivia gets in and quickly placed her phone in the back seat and escapes before Mick could take her. Olivia and Chris went to search the location where Irene held hostage with the police, but couldn't find her. But soon, Olivia and Chris found Irene running and took her home. Olivia sees Mick at the hospital and shouts at him. Olivia found out that Mick is in fact Irene's long lost son. Olivia tries to comfort and cheer Hunter up when he found out that Josh Barrett (Jackson Gallagher) is Charlotte's killer and Hunter pushes her away. Olivia befriended with Hunter's new friend from the community service, Jordan Walsh (Benny Turland) and at a party held by Hunter at the farmhouse, Hunter gets drunk and gets out of control, as Olivia tries to stop him. Hunter got jealous when he sees Jordan hitting on Olivia and attacks him.

Olivia invites Jordan to Evie's School Sleep Out at Summer Bay High and invites her new friend, Tabitha Ford (Eliza Scanlen) to the event too. Hunter attended with VJ and continues to argue with Olivia for hanging out with the wrong friends, and admit to her that she likes Jordan. Tabitha lied to Olivia that that Hunter mentioned that her scars are disgusting and Olivia believes her. She confronts him at Angelo's and Hunter admits that he never says that he scars are ugly. Olivia continues to hang out with Tabitha until she found out that she has been framing Hunter for cheating on school exams. Olivia ends things with Tabitha. Olivia was later cyber bullied by other students and an unknown person named Kirk. However Hunter told her that Tabitha is Kirk, and Tabitha was expelled from Summer Bay High. While Tabitha was clearing out her locker, she mocks at Olivia, who lost her temper and calls her a "psycho". At the diner, Olivia meets Tabitha's sister Juliet Ford (Rose Marel), who invites her and Hunter to her and Tabitha's table for lunch. Juliet told Olivia that her parents are sending Tabitha to boarding school, and as Tabitha and Juliet leaves, Olivia says goodbye to Tabitha and wishes her well at her new school. Olivia and Hunter also reconcile their relationship, but it went worse when Hunter became stressed at his HSC exams and lashes at Olivia. They later broke up and Olivia befriends Mason Morgan (Orpheus Pledger), who asked her on a date. Hunter became jealous and Olivia tells him to move on, as she is too. At the music festival, Olivia and Mason kissed and start a relationship. In 2017, Olivia and Mason sneak off to make out and was caught by Irene at the Summer Bay Auto. Olivia realised she still has feelings for Hunter and ends things with Mason. Olivia and Hunter later got back together, and they decided to move in together, but Irene disapproves, but changed her mind. David D'Angelo (alias Robert Perez) made his first appearance on 9 November 1998, played by Valentino Arico[45] and then by Ross Pennissi in shadow form, credited as Mr. X.[45] Tony Poli began playing David until the character's departure on 13 October 1999.[46]

David's storyline sees him play out his revenge against Joel Nash (David Woodley) who imprisoned him for 15 years in Hong Kong.[47] He uses Joel's daughter Gypsy (Kimberley Cooper) as a pawn in his plan by posing as her tutor, before kidnapping her.[48] Cooper told the official Home and Away website of her experiences filming with Poli in the storyline: "It was pretty scary. I can't really describe it. It was kind of fun but it was kind of hard." She then told how Poli was "so much fun" and helped her in a lot of situations. "He pointed out a few things and just talked me through it and he gave me a lot of feedback, too. He was really cool." When asked if Poli was anything like his character, Cooper added: "No, not at all. And to watch him do Robert and then see him talking to his son on the phone making baby noises was pretty strange."[48]

David arrives in Summer Bay and secretly records a conversation between Gypsy and Justine Welles (Bree Desborough) and then records a conversation between Gypsy's father, Joel and uncle Travis (Nic Testoni). He assumes the name Robert Perez and begins dating Gypsy. He then moves into the Caravan Park and advertises his services as a Maths Tutor and is hired by Joel and his wife Natalie (Angelica la Bozetta) to help Gypsy improve her grades. David sends a tape of Joel and Travis' conversation where Joel admits he does not want any more kids to Natalie and she is upset. Travis and his wife Rebecca (Belinda Emmett) become suspicious of David when he mentions Joel and Natalie's problems and they alert them. David tells Gypsy about a book sale and takes off with her, in order to kidnap her. Gypsy's brother, Tom (Graeme Squires) and Will Smith (Zac Drayson) break into David's caravan and they discover newspaper cuttings featuring Joel and his return to Summer Bay. It emerges David is a criminal Joel apprehended in Hong Kong. He holds Gypsy hostage for three weeks and sends the Nashes some cryptic clues in the form of recorded poems by Gypsy and crossword puzzles. He later takes Joel hostage then dumps him in the woods and tells him he has two hours to save his family. David steals Joel's identity and cleans out his bank account and then sets fire to the Nashes house with Natalie (now played by Antoinette Byron), Tom and Gypsy inside.[48] During the blaze, David takes Natalie hostage and Joel apprehends David after Natalie gives clues to her whereabouts via telephone. David is then jailed and Joel visits him to demand his money back but David has the last laugh when he riles him about Gypsy, angering him.

David escapes from prison several months later to retrieve the money he stole, which is buried in the bush but is enraged to discover that Duncan Stewart (Brendan McKensy) and Gazza Boyd (Sebastian Huber) have already found the money. He then threatens to harm Duncan and his mother, Ailsa (Judy Nunn). He orders Duncan to retrieve the money from Gazza and warns him Ailsa will be hurt if he calls the police. David then gags Ailsa and takes Duncan hostage and tries to flee the country but his accomplice Lauren Healy (Merridy Eastman). Joel tracks David down with several officers and the chase culminates in David losing his footing and Joel saves him from a cliff fall. He files a complaint against Joel, alleging that he hit him but Joel proves his innocence and David is jailed once more.

Rachel Browne of The Sun-Herald listed David's vendetta among the best television cliffhangers at the close of the 1998 Australian television season.[47] Ahead of the 1999 Season premiere, she described David as a "Hooded Psycho bent on revenge".[49] David's kidnapping of Gypsy and stalking of the Nash family was nominated for "Most Dramatic Storyline" at the 1999 Inside Soap Awards.[14]
