Clachaig Inn
The Clachaig Inn is a hotel and pub in Glen Coe, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. It is popular with walkers and climbers who come to visit the surrounding mountains.
The inn is sited towards the western end of the glen at grid reference NN126567, about 3 km (1.9 mi) southeast of the modern Glencoe village, on the old road just to the north of the A82 trunk road. It lies at the foot of Clachaig Gully, a precarious descent route (and one advised against) to the west of the Aonach Eagach ridge, and faces across the glen to the starkly vertical western shoulder of Bidean nam Bian.
The inn, dating back to the 16th century, has a sign on its door saying "No Hawkers or Campbells" in a wry reference to the Massacre of Glencoe that took place hereabouts. (It also used to have added, in pen, no credit cards! I do not know for certain but it seems highly unlikely that an inn existed anywhere near this site earlier than the late 18th century. Prior to the opening up of the Highlands via military roads following the last Jacobite rebellion (1745-6) Glencoe was off the beaten track with travellers passing by to the west by the Ballachulish straits. Locals would of course have provided their own ale and whisky and would not have had an inn. The Inn's own website notes records of the Clachaig from the mid 19th century and a date for the inn somewhere between the 1750s and 1850s seems likely. If there are records of an earlier inn then please cite them here).
Nowadays the Clachaig Inn has three bars, serves food and has accommodation.
Sets for Made of Honour and the third Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, were built in the area.
