The Citra Award for Best Leading Actor (Indonesian: Piala Citra untuk Pemeran Pria Utama) is an award given at the Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) to Indonesian actors for their achievements in lead roles. Described by Screen International as "Indonesia's equivalent to the Oscars",[1] the Citra Awards are the country's most prestigious film awards.[2] They are intended to recognise Indonesian achievements in film and draw the public's interest to the cinema industry.[3] Initially winners were selected from all entries by a jury, but owing to efficiency concerns and widespread disapproval of winners within the Indonesian film industry, beginning in 1979 the IFF instituted a nomination system in which a committee selected the Citra Award recipients from a shortlist of three to six nominees.[4] The shortlist has remained at five selections since 1987.

Initially known as the Indonesian Film Festival Awards, the Citra Award was first given at the IFF in 1955. There were two recipients that year: A.N. Alcaff of Lewat Djam Malam and A. Hadi of Tarmina. The multiple winners, also found in the Best Film and Best Leading Actress categories, was controversial; film critics considered Lewat Djam Malam by far the better film and suggested that Djamaluddin Malik's funding of the festival had influenced Tarmina's win.[5] Succeeding festivals were held in 1960 and 1967. The IFF was held annually from 1973.[6] Awards were presented at all IFF ceremonies except in 1980; that year, the jury decided that none of the nominated actors had put on performances worthy of the prize.[6][7] After the 1992 IFF, a sharp decline in film production led the festival to be discontinued. It was reinstated as an annual event in 2004, after receiving funds from the Indonesian government.[1][8] The most recent winner of this Citra Award is Dedy Soetomo, who was recognised at the 2015 IFF for his performance in Mencari Hilal.

A total of 61 actors have been nominated for a Citra Award for Best Leading Actor, 26 of whom have won at least one. As of 2012 the most recognised actor at the IFF is Deddy Mizwar, who received ten nominations (with three wins) beginning with Bukan Impian Semusim in 1982.[9] The only other actor to receive three wins is Sukarno M. Noor, while three other actors have won two Citra Awards: Benyamin Sueb, Slamet Rahardjo, and Tio Pakusadewo. The actor with the most nominations without a win is Ray Sahetapy, who received six nominations between 1984 and 1990. Two films have seen multiple cast members receive nominations. Of these, only Nagabonar Jadi 2 earned a win, with Mizwar receiving the award. Four actors – Mizwar, Nicholas Saputra, Reza Rahadian, and Zainal Abidin – have received more than one nomination in a single year; each won for one of their nominations.
