The Toronto District School Board is Canada's largest school board governing 110 secondary schools including X alternative schools, educating over x secondary level students. The TDSB was created in 1998 following the merger of the Board of Education for the City of York, the East York Board of Education, the North York Board of Education, the Scarborough Board of Education, the Etobicoke Board of Education and the Toronto Board of Education. Students may enter three general streams based on their goals upon graduating highs chool: academic for students planning on attending university, applied for students planning on attending college, and locally developed for students with special needs who are planning on entering the workforce.
The Ontario Ministry of Education has set benchmarks in mathematics and literacy in order to compare students between schools. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is an arm’s-length crown agency created by Government of Ontario. The purpose of EQAO tests is to ensure that there is accountability between school boards and schools in the publicly funded system in Ontario. Educational accountability is important to three key stakeholders: taxpayers, elected officials, and teachers.[1] All academic and applied students in grade 9 write their respective EQAO math test, and all grade 10 students write a literacy test (OSSLT).
Some schools in the TDSB offer specialized programs to provide unique opportunities and to provide a focus on a variety of interests. Each specialized program has specific requirements as well as unique admission criteria.
- Africentric Secondary Program: Students are given an alternative way of learning in some of their courses through an Africentric lens.
- Arts Focussed Schools/Arts Program: Special programs offer a focus on the arts.
- Entrepreneurship: A special program that develops the innovation, flexibility and self-reliance required to be successful in a business-driven environment.
- Centre of Innovation for Skills and Technologies (CIST): Customized learning hubs focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students focus on engineering design process through real-world applications with the goal of preparation for University level studies.
