Chums Corner is a census-designated place (CDP) in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, United States.[1] Its population was 946 as of the 2010 census.[2]

History

Around 1932 Deronda "Chum" Crandall and his wife Eva began operating a gas station and a grocery store at a major highway intersection a few miles south of Traverse City. Over the years the intersection became known as "Chum's Corners". Chum sold the business and retired in 1953, and died in Traverse City in early 1959.[3]

Geography

The community is located in northern Blair Township at the intersection of U.S. Route 31 and M-37, 7 miles (11 km) south of Traverse City, the Grand Traverse County seat, and 23 miles (37 km) east of Beulah via US-31. M-37 leads south 12 miles (19 km) to Buckley. The CDP extends west to include the eastern shore of Silver Lake within Blair Township. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.7 square miles (6.9 km2), all of it land.[4]
