Cherry Bomb is the third mini-album of NCT 127, the Seoul based sub-unit of the South Korean boy group NCT. It was released by S.M. Entertainment on June 14, 2017 and distributed by Genie Music. The mini-album includes a total of seven tracks.[1][2]
The EP was a commercial success peaking at number 2 on the Gaon Album Chart. It has sold over 100,000 physical copies as of June 2017.
Background and release
On May 25, S.M. Entertainment confirmed NCT 127's comeback in June and stated that the group filmed the music video for their comeback in Gyeonggi Province.[3][4]
On June 5, at midnight (KST), NCT 127's first teaser image of their comeback was released. The image features what appears to an explosion of cherries. On the same day, the agency revealed that the EP is titled "Cherry Bomb" and is set to be released on June 14 at 18:00 (KST).[5][6]
On June 7, NCT 127 released a set of teaser images for Taeyong, WinWin, and Doyoung for their "Cherry Bomb" comeback. The images features three different concepts.[7][8] On June 8, the group shared three teaser images of Haechan, Jaehyun, and Yuta.[9] On June 9, teaser images of Mark, Taeil and Johnny were released.[10] On June 10, NCT 127 released teaser images of the whole group together.[11][12] The group also released cartoon characters video on their official Instagram page, also special message from the members.
On June 10, the group dropped the first teaser clip of their comeback single "Cherry Bomb".[13] On the same day, it was reported that NCT 127's comeback showcase tickets were all sold out in 5 seconds.[14][15] On June 11, the second teaser clip of "Cherry Bomb" was released.[16] On June 12, the track listing of the mini-album were released, as well as a special clip of "Cherry Bomb".[1] The mini-album was officially released on June 14.[17] Thus, Cherry Bomb music video has hit with more than 3 million views in just 24 hours.
Single
"Cherry Bomb" was released as the title track in conjunction with the EP on June 14. It was produced by Dem Jointz, Deez and Yoo Young-jin. Is described as a "complex synth and bass-infused" track with colorful compositions that meet the members' unique rap, vocals and powerful performance.[18][19] The choreography of "Cherry Bomb" is by Tony Testa who choreographed NCT 127's previous single "Fire Truck".[18]
The song entered at number 37 on the Gaon Digital Chart on the chart issue dated June 11-17, 2017, with 39,006 downloads sold.[20][21]
Promotions
"Cherry Bomb" was deemed "unfit for broadcast" by KBS due to mentions of violence, gory descriptions, and more,[22] thus the group will not perform the song on Music Bank.[23]
On the same day of Cherry Bomb's release, On June 14, NCT 127 kick-started their promotions with a showcase.[18] The group promoted in South Korean music shows starting from June 15 where they performed "Cherry Bomb" and "0 Mile".[24]
Commercial performance
Cherry Bomb's pre-orders reached 101,444 copies, exceeding NCT 127's previous mini-albums NCT #127 and Limitless.[25]
Cherry Bomb debuted at No. 2 on the Gaon Album Chart[26] and Billboard's US World Albums, debuted at No. 21 on Billboard's Top Heatseekers Albums, and No. 22 at Oricon Albums Chart. The EP entered at number 2 on the Gaon Album Chart for the month of June 2017, with 105,877 physical copies sold.[27]
