David "Chase" Baird (born March 18, 1988) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer.[1]
Biography
Baird was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah.[2] He was exposed to creative musicianship at an early age by his father, a trumpet player who played in rock bands and owned an eclectic collection of instruments.[2] He began studying the saxophone around age ten and progressed rapidly.[2] By age 14, he was discovered and mentored by the late great tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker.[3][1][2] His family eventually relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where began to collaborate with other young musicians, including pianist Julian Waterfall Pollack.[4] Baird studied both music and psychology at California State University, Long Beach,[5] and eventually transferred to the Juilliard School in New York City.[1][5][6]
In addition to his work in jazz with drummer Antonio Sánchez[7], guitarist Nir Felder[3], vocalist Thana Alexa[7] and others, he has also performed with popular artists Chaka Khan[3] and Matthew Morrison.[8][1] He is also featured in the soundtrack to Emancipated, a 2009 film by P.K. Ziainia with music by composer Rodrigo Denis.[9]
