Channel K is an indie rock band from Houston, Texas.
The concept for the band came up in 2010. Prior to this, founding member Ken Sarmiento established himself as a fixture in the Houston live music scene as the guitarist for Phuz, a group of mostly Filipino-Americans. A video game enthusiast, he drew inspiration for Channel K's name from the Fairchild Channel F home video game console.[1]
"I have a love for video games," said Sarmiento. "Fairchild Channel F was the first home video game system that took cartridges and was created by Jerry Lawson (a black engineer, which was a rarity back in the days) in the '70s. Love the story and love the Channel F system. I took the F off and changed it to K. I was thinking, 'Tune in to my channel, Channel K.'"
Channel K released a three-song EP titled Human Beings in 2012.[2] The group officially launched in 2013, and they began performing at various venues in Houston. Among these venues were the House of Blues Houston and Warehouse Live. The band performed in showcases at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas in 2016 and 2017.
The quintet released their second EP, Super Queen, on July 14, 2017. It features the titular track and live staple "Forbidden Misery". To mark the release, the band held a party at Warehouse Live with Coleman DeWayne and Chris Valdes as guest performers.
