Car Seat Headrest is an American indie rock band originally from Leesburg, Virginia, United States, currently based in Seattle, Washington. Begun as a solo recording project in 2010 by Will Barnes (born August 23, 1992), known professionally as Will Toledo, Car Seat Headrest released 12 albums on the music platform Bandcamp. Signed to Matador Records in 2015, Car Seat Headrest began a tour in 2016 presenting material from their latest album Teens of Denial as a full band. Toledo's work is notable for its large online cult following. The group has received attention from publications including Pitchfork,[1] Rolling Stone,[2] The New Yorker and Paste,[3] amongst others.[4]
History
2010–14: Bandcamp beginnings, Twin Fantasy
Car Seat Headrest began as the project of Will Toledo, who chose the name "Car Seat Headrest" due to his decision to record the vocals of his first albums in the back seat of his car for privacy. Toledo's production has gradually grown less lo-fi, but he still remains an effective example of the DIY ethic.
Toledo saw a large influx of new fans with his 2011 release Twin Fantasy, which has become the most popular of his self-released albums.
2015–present: Matador, Teens of Style, Teens of Denial
In September 2015, Car Seat Headrest announced on his Facebook page that he had signed an album deal with Matador Records.[5] In October 2015, Car Seat Headrest released the compilation album Teens of Style under the label, his first album that was not self-released via Bandcamp.
A new album created with traditional studio processes, Teens of Denial, was released on May 20, 2016.[6]
Style
AllMusic biographer Mark Deming wrote that Car Seat Headrest created "moody and introspective lo-fi pop tunes that are melodic but structurally ambitious at once".[7] Deputy News Editor of Pitchfork Jeremy Gordon states on new album Teens of Denial "Will Toledo reaffirms that he is ahead of the pack as an imaginative singer-songwriter, capable of crafting dynamic indie rock."
