Development and pre-production

Anne Curtis (left) and Brandon Vera (right) appear in Buy Bust.

Production for Buy Bust began as early as mid 2016 which, according to director Erik Matti, included: "finding a good mix of actors, training, pre-sales, test shoots, storyboards, training, pre-vis, look tests, set construction, training finding the right balance between budget ambition and resources".[3] The screenplay was co-written by Matti and his wife and regular collaborator Michiko Yamamoto;[1] it underwent a total of 16 revisions.[3] Matti has described the project his "first full-on action film" in recent years.[2][3]

Anne Curtis and former mixed martial arts fighter Brandon Vera were confirmed to have joined the cast in late June 2016.[4] A week before filming, Curtis underwent rigorous training at the Scout Ranger Training School where she learned knife fighting in close quarters as well as basic weapon handling; her training regimen included running while encumbered with 12 kilograms of weight.[5] Curtis preferred performing stunts by herself.[3][5]

Filming

Principal photography began on March 28, 2017.[3]

Controversy

At the urging of the producers, Matti submitted the script of Buy Bust to the 2017 Metro Manila Film Festival, but was rejected in the first tier of the selection process.[6][7] The executive committee who rejected Matti's script was composed of new members that had been tapped as replacements to the three members of the previous committee who had resigned due to the MMFF's failure to accommodate the reforms that occurred in the 2016 edition; the three former members alleged that the execom favored "putting too much emphasis on commerce over art".[8] The decision drew the ire of Matti and he released a lengthy Facebook post in protest, claiming that the selection process was "rigged" to favor "the powerful personalities controlling the festival".[9] In early July 2017, Matti stated that he had no intentions to submit the finished film, which is the second tier of the selection process.[6]
