Brian Barnwell is an American politician and lawyer who is currently a member of the New York State Assembly.[1] He represents District 30, which is made up of Maspeth and Woodside, as well as portions of Middle Village, Astoria, Sunnyside and Long Island City.

A member of the Democratic Party, Barnwell a political newcomer defeated 9 term incumbent Margaret Markey, in a major upset, obtaining over 60% of the vote.[2]

Career

Barnwell first announced in July 2015 that he would seek the District 30 seat in the Assembly.[3] He defeated 9 term incumbent Margaret Markey in the 2016 Democratic primary,[2] and won that year's general election over Republican challenger Tony Nunziato.[1]

Since his time in office, Barnwell has introduced legislation that deals with helping the middle class and seniors, specifically, through tax reform relief. Barnwell also kept his campaign promises by drafting legislation to attempt to reform the affordable housing formula, and by proposing bills that would allow for tougher sentencing on violent felons.[4]

Barnwell is also pushing a bill that will outlaw the sale of puppies by what is known as "puppy mills." [5]
