Reception

Breaking Through received mostly negative reviews.[1][2] Justin Lowe from Hollywood Reporter called it derivative.[3] Tat Wolfen from Saturday Star wrote that it was "yet another dance movie that has nothing new to offer".[4] Los Angeles Times' Katie Walsh called it "a dance movie without good dancing".[5] Monica Castillo writing in Village Voice said it was "convoluted drama" and had " tepid routines".[6] Film Journal International's David Noh thought it "could well rank as the blandest movie musical ever made."[7] On the positive side Sandie Angulo Chen of Common Sense Media gave it three stars, saying the story was "both familiar and heartwarming".[8]
