Boraida-class replenishment oiler

The Boraida class is a ship class of two replenishment oilers built for the Saudi Navy by CN la Ciotat, Marseilles. It is a modified version of the Durance-class replenishment ship.

Construction

The Boraida class have a displacement of 10,500 tonnes (10,300 long tons; 11,600 short tons), are 135 metres (443 ft) long, have a beam of 18.7 metres (61 ft), and a draft of 7 metres (23 ft). They use two 13,200 horsepower (9,800 kW) Pielstick diesel engines, and have a top speed of 20.5 knots (38.0 km/h; 23.6 mph). They have a complement of 140, and can hold up to 195. The ship can carry 4,350 tonnes (4,280 long tons; 4,800 short tons) of diesel, 35 tonnes (34 long tons; 39 short tons) of aviation fuel, 140 tonnes (140 long tons; 150 short tons) of freshwater, 100 tonnes (98 long tons; 110 short tons) of ammo, and 100 tonnes (98 long tons; 110 short tons) of supplies. The ship is armed by two 40 millimetres (1.6 in) Bofors 40 mm automatic cannons, both of which are located on the bridge. They have an aft helicopter deck, and can carry either two Eurocopter AS365 Dauphins or one Eurocopter AS332 Super Puma.^[1]

History

Both ships were built at the La Ciotat shipyard in Marseilles. The lead ship of the class, Boraida, was laid down on April 1982, launched on January 22, 1983, and entered into service on February 29, 1984. Yunbou was laid down in 1983, launched on October 24, 1984, and entered into service on August 29, 1985. Both ships were renovated in the 2000s.^[1]
