Blumhouse Productions is an American film and television production company, founded by Jason Blum.[1] Blumhouse is mostly known for producing low-budget horror films, such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, Sinister, Split and Get Out.[2][3] In 2014, Blumhouse produced the Academy Award–nominated film Whiplash, for which Blum was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.[4] The company currently has a 10-year first-look deal with Universal Pictures.[5]

Overview

According to various stories, the company's model is to produce movies independently and release them wide through the studio system.[6] Blumhouse has a first-look deal with Universal Pictures.[7] Blumhouse's low-budget model began in 2009 with Paranormal Activity, which was made for $15,000. The film was released by Paramount Pictures and grossed over $193 million worldwide.[8] Blumhouse produced Insidious, which grossed over $97 million worldwide on a budget of $1.5 million,[9] and Sinister, which grossed over $77 million worldwide from a budget of $3 million.[2] Blumhouse and Eli Roth have a digital network called Crypt TV where they release horror shorts and other content on social media outlets.[10] On May 2016, Blumhouse.com announced a podcast titled Shock Waves with hosts Rob Galluzzo, Ryan Turek, Rebekah McKendry and Elric Kane.[11]

Blumhouse has worked with directors such as James Wan, Mike Flanagan, James DeMonaco, M. Night Shyamalan and Scott Derrickson. Blumhouse's films include its first for Universal Pictures – The Purge starring Ethan Hawke – which debuted on June 7, 2013,[12] Insidious: Chapter 2, released on September 13, 2013[13] and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, released on January 3, 2014.[14] Films the company produced in 2014 include Stretch, which was released on October 7, The Purge: Anarchy, which opened on July 18, Jessabelle for Lionsgate Entertainment, which was released on November 7,[15] and Whiplash, which was released on October 10, 2014. Blumhouse also produced The Boy Next Door, which was released on January 23, 2015. In 2016 Blumhouse produced Hush, The Purge: Election Year, In a Valley of Violence and Ouija: Origin of Evil. In 2017 Blumhouse released Split, Get Out and Sleight.

On the television side, Blumhouse has a first look deal with Lionsgate, and the company produced the short-lived series Stranded for Syfy and executive produced The River with Amblin Television for ABC.[16][17] For Halloween 2012, Blumhouse opened the Blumhouse of Horrors, an interactive haunted house experience in Downtown Los Angeles.[18]

On September 9, 2014 Blumhouse established BH Tilt, dedicated to generating movies from Blumhouse and other filmmakers for multi-platform release.[19] The releases from BH Tilt are The Green Inferno,[20] The Darkness,[21] Incarnate,[22] The Resurrection of Gavin Stone,[23] The Belko Experiment,[24] Sleight,[25] Lowriders,[26] Birth of the Dragon[27] and Delirium.[28]

On November 11, 2014 Blumhouse launches Blumhouse Books, dedicated to having filmmakers and authors create original horror and thriller novels. The first couple releases are The Blumhouse Book of Nightmares: The Haunted City (2015), The Apartment (2016), Feral (2017), Meddling Kids (2017) and Haunted Nights (2017).[29][30]

On May 23, 2016 it was announced that Blumhouse, Miramax and Trancas would be developing a new Halloween film which they will co-finance. John Carpenter is set to produce the project and act as creative consultant. John Carpenter stated, "Thirty-eight years after the original Halloween, I'm going to help to try to make the 10th sequel the scariest of them all."[31] On February 9, 2017 John Carpenter announced that the next Halloween film would be released on October 19, 2018, and is going to be written by David Gordon Green and Danny McBride and will be directed by Green.[32] The film is said to be a direct sequel to Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981).[33]

On April 26, 2017 M. Night Shyamalan announced on his twitter that Blinding Edge Pictures, Blumhouse and Universal Pictures will release Glass, the sequel to Unbreakable (2000) and Split (2017). The film is set to be released on January 18, 2019.[34]

In May 2017, producer Jason Blum confirmed that Blumhouse would be working on the film adaptation of the highly successful indie game, Five Nights at Freddy's[35] after securing the rights from Warner Bros. Pictures, who initially announced the film adaptation back in April 2015. Blumhouse will be working close with the games creator, Scott Cawthon, to make the film.

On August 1, 2017, it was announced that Blumhouse and DreamWorks Animation would be working on the animated film, Spooky Jack.[36]
