"Blood Sweat & Tears" is a single by South Korean boy group BTS. The single was released by Big Hit on October 10, 2016 in South Korea, while the Japanese single was released on May 10, 2017 under Universal Music Japan and Def Jam Recordings with two B-side songs, the Japanese version of "Not Today" and "Spring Day".[1]

Background

The group held a press conference for the release of their album on the 10th. Asked about their new concept and its meaning, leader Rap Monster explained, "The harder a temptation is to resist, the more you think about it and vacillate. That uncertainty is part of the process of growing. Blood Sweat & Tears is a song that shows how one thinks, chooses, and grows."[2]

Music video

On October 6 of 2016, they released a teaser for the song.[3][4] At 12:00 KST, October 10, 2016, the official music video was released.[5] The six minute video features Rap Monster reciting from a passage of Hermann Hesse’s Demian, which was an inspiration for the album Wings concept, and does not appear on the album version of the song. Billboard K-Town's Tamar Herman described the music video as "a haunting [one] that explores ideas of fate, reality, life and death, and falling from grace."[6]

The MV was directed by Choi Yongseok and Ko Yoojeong of Lumpens. Additional notable players of production include Nam Hyunwoo of GDW as director of photography, Kim Gyeungseok of Sunny as gaffer, Lee Moonyoung of Myllab as art director, and Shin Yunkyun of DnD line for special effects. Choreography was created by Keone Madrid & Quick Style Crew and supervised by Son Sungdeuk.[5] Within 24 hours of the music video's release, it reached 6.3 million views, setting a new record.[7] Also on October 13, it was reported that "Blood, Sweat & Tears" had become the fastest K-pop music video by a group to reach 10 million views. According to reports, this was achieved in less than 42 hours - almost half the amount of time taken for their previous record "Fire", which took 72 hours.[8]

Commercial performance

In South Korea, the song became the group's first domestic number one hit on Gaon Digital Chart,[9][10] selling 198,987 in the first week and having 3,184,355 streams.[11][12] The song sold 362,171 in total in October 2016, and charted 6 on the monthly chart.[13][14] In May 2017, the song become the first song from the group to sell over 1 million copies in South Korea.

In United States and Canada, BTS became the third K-pop act to chart on the Canadian Hot 100, ranking at number 8, a new best for a K-pop group.[15] BTS also topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart for the week of October 29.[16] They also charted on YouTube Music Global Top 100 - 17th on the video chart, and 14th on the tracks chart.[17]

In Japan, the Korean version charted 18 in Billboard Japan Hot 100, and selling 4,156[18][19] On May 10, 2017, the Japanese version was released, selling 144,234 in the first day, and charting first on Oricon daily chart,[20] and 223,082 according to SoundScan Japan.[21] The song charted 1st on Oricon weekly single chart, Billboard Japan Hot 100, & top singles sales, selling 310,276 copies in the first week according to SoundScan Japan.[22]
