Gameplay

The game is set on a moving train as two children — Scarlet and Finn — learn to navigate their relationship with each other, until their paths cross with a mysterious figure.[1] Prominent themes in the story include the transition from childhood to adulthood,[2] loss and surrealism.[3]

Through a series of creative and contextual puzzles, players unlock key details about Finn and Scarlett’s past and uncover the mystery behind the train journey.

Development

The game was the first developed by indie studio PaperSeven and announced via trailer in June 2016.[4] The small team had previously worked together on racing games, such as Split Second and Pure,[5] and outside the genre, on The Room and at Disney.[6] It is planned for release in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One platforms.[7]

Polygon recommended the game for players who appreciated narrative-driven games, such as Gone Home, Dear Esther, and Firewatch.[13] The website wrote that a child was not portrayed as well in a video game since Ni no Kuni.[14] It was among the website staff's most anticipated games of 2017.[15] Blackwood Crossing was awarded UKIE’S Game of the Show award at Gamescom 2016.[16]
