Bijoy Krishna Girls’ College is a leading women's college in Howrah, India. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and is affiliated to University of Calcutta. It is the sole girls' college in Howrah district. Formerly it was Girls' College, Howrah.
History
The college was founded on 1st August 1947 by Bijoy Krishna Bhattacharya to promote and provide higher education for women because education is the key method to enlighten women. The college aims at "Sa Vidya Ya Vimuktaye" (Learning leads to emancipation). This college had enlightened with a number of poets and writers. Prominent Bengali poet Jibanananda Das and famous Bengali novelist Bani Basu both were the professors of this college.
Location
This college is located in the heart of the city and just in the vicinity of Howrah Junction railway station. Howrah known as twin city to Kolkata, located on the west bank of holy Ganges river. The Bhāgirathi-Hooghly river, called 'Ganga' or Ganges traditionally, is very close to the college. Nabanna (building), the new State Secretariat of West Bengal is situated in Howrah and also close to the college.
Communication and Transportation
This college is well communicated with Kolkata city and other parts of India through railways and roads. It is also well communicated with launch service from Howrah Ferry Ghat. The nearest railway station is Howrah Junction railway station. It is also easy accessible from Sealdah railway station, Santragachi Junction railway station and Kolkata Railway Station. The Kolkata Metro Line 2 or East West Metro Corridor, which is under construction, within a walking distance from the college. The nearest international and domestic airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.
Accreditation
This college is National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) approved National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited Grade "B++" college with Colleges with Potential for Excellence (UGC-CPE) status.
In 2016, the college has re-accredited with Grade "B++" by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[1]
Facilities
The college consists of a Library and Computer Laboratories, National Service Scheme (NSS) unit, Academy of Competitive Examination unit, career oriented Add-on Courses, Placement unit, Kanyashree Prakalpa, own Gymnasium, Eco-club and many more. The college also consists of a Psychological Counselling Centre - "Aalo" (English: The Light). This college has own girls' hostel "Banalata" (inspired from Bengali poem Banalata Sen) and a well equipped auditorium "Jibanananda Sabhagriha". The college has a study centre for IGNOU.[2] The college has two well hygienic canteens, a tea club for tea lovers and a cafeteria.
