Biete or Biate is one of the oldest languages in India. The speakers of the language are known as Biate and are spread over many parts of North east India viz. Meghalaya, Assam, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura. However, the majority of Biate speaking population today is concentrated in the districts of Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar) and Cachar in Assam and East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts in Meghalaya.
Geographical distribution
Biate is spoken in the following locations (Ethnologue).
- Aizawl district, northeastern Mizoram: in Darlawn, Ratu, and New Vervek villages
- Assam: Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar) and Cachar district
- Manipur
- Meghalaya: East Jaintia Hills district and West Jaintia Hills district
