Biju Patnaik International Airport (IATA: BBI, ICAO: VEBS), also known as the Bhubaneswar Airport, is situated in the Indian city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha.[4] It is the sole international airport in the state. It is named after the former chief minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, who was also a famed aviator and freedom fighter. On 5 March 2013, a new terminal (T1) was inaugurated by Minister of Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh. This terminal caters to all domestic flights while the other terminal (T2) has been refurbished to support international operations.[5] The Government of India accorded international status to the airport on 30 October 2013.[6] In fiscal year 2016-17, Bhubaneswar Airport was ranked the 17th busiest airport in India by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) registering a 23.1% growth in traffic over the previous year.

Terminal

Terminal 1

Inaugurated in March 2013, the terminal has a capacity of 4 million passengers per annum and was built at a cost of Rs 145 crore.[5][7] The new terminal has been developed by the AAI as part of the upgrade of 35 non-metro airports across the country.[8] Terminal T1, a two-storied building with a total area of 18,240 square metres (196,300 sq ft), consists of 2 aerobridges, 4 elevators, several escalators, 18 check-in counters, 3 arrival luggage conveyors, a spa, and multiple seating areas. Apart from the Departure and Arrival Lounges, T1 terminal also has several other lounges, including VIP Lounges, Pal Heights Spa Lounge, Dakota Lounge and Mayfair Lounge.[5][9] The terminal is environment-friendly, built according to green building standards, with sewage treatment plants and provision for rain water harvesting. The internal walls of the terminal are decorated with tribal motifs, designs, masks, and sculptures derived from Odisha's culture.[10] The new terminal also has food kiosks, gift shops, bookstores, art galleries and handloom/handicraft kiosks.[11] The terminal was built by Lanco Infratech (Octamec).[12]

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 handles international operations from the Biju Patnaik International Airport. It was built in the mid 1960s to cater domestic flights. The terminal being built over an area of 5,178 square metres (55,740 sq ft), consists of 6 check-in counters, 10 immigration counters, 4 customs counters, numerous amenities and multiple seating areas.[13] Currently, Air India and AirAsia operate international flights to and from the Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar.

Cargo

The Common User Domestic Cargo Terminal (CUDCT) of Biju Patnaik International Airport is currently under construction, though temporary terminal is handling the cargo operations to and from the state. This has opened up an avenue allowing state exporters to export goods faster to the Middle East and European destinations.

Coast Guard Air Enclave

The Coast Guard Air Enclave along with the 743 Dornier Squadron was commissioned by former Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard in Biju Patnaik International Airport on the 15th of December 2014. [14] The units operate under the operational and administrative control of the Commander of the Coast Guard Region (North East) through the Commander, Coast Guard District No 7 (Odisha). Several strategic air operations are streamlined and synergized for the protection of the sea areas off the Costal Odisha. [15]

Airport Expansion

Due to increase in air traffic New ATC tower construction work is in progress at a height of 44.2 mtrs in a builtup area of 519 sq mtrs from the existing 23.46 mtrs. The new tower will be a 11storey building located adjacent to the new domestic terminal and in the middle of the runway having a 360degree view to the runway and operational areas. The project will be completed with in two years.

Old terminal (International terminal) T1 will be integrated with swanky domestic terminal T2. After the integration passenger will be at ease to switch terminals. Both T1 & T2 will be fitted with aero bridges ( One each)

The airport to get Automated Weather Observation System (AWOS) in the runway to provide accurate data to the pilot while landing of the aircraft. Use of this Hi-tech system will improve safety during any adverse weather condition.

Runway Expansion

As per AAI the main runway 14/32 is proposed to be extended up to 10500 ft. From the existing 9000ft. 43acre land already been swapped between AAI & State Agricultural University (OUAT). Apart from runway expansion 11 additional parking bays also to be constructed supported by rapid exit parallel taxiway. After construction of 11 parking bays total capacity of the airport will increase to 20.

Accommodation

AAI have floated tender for construction & maintenance of a 100 room 3 Star hotel near the Old terminal Parking lot, to be completed within 2 years.

Connectivity

Biju Patnaik Airport is situated around 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south of the Bhubaneswar city center. It is connected properly to the main city by public transport. The Bhubaneswar Railway Station is 2 – 3 km from the airport. Various cab services like OLA, Uber etc. also provide service from the airport to different parts of the city.[16]
