Bhilai is a city in the district of Durg, Chhattisgarh, in eastern central India.[1]

Civic Center

It was started as a shopping center consisting of two rows of shops & stores arranged in L shape, initially it had TATA (textiles) on one end and BATA(shoes) on other hand. This was the only hub for lots of social activities, entertainment and shopping for long time before Bhilai expanded beyond its boundaries when shopping complex like Gangotri & Akash Ganga started in Supela in late 80's .

It lies on Central Avenue Road.[2] Major Exhibitions like National Handloom Expo took place in this Center.[3] It is home for Nehru Art Gallery.[4][5]

Etymology

It is believed that the name "Bhilai" is derived from the Bhil tribe which originally inhabited this region and continues to dwell in the nearby forests till date.[6]
