Berks County Intermediate Unit

The Berks County Intermediate Unit is an organization which was established in 1971 by the Pennsylvania State Legislature to provide educational services to a number of school districts in Berks County. These services include transportation,[1] special education services,[2] alternative education services,[3][4][5] Early Intervention, Head Start and PreK Counts,[6] child care, technology, internet wide area network, curriculum development, professional development, driver education, security,[7] extracurricular events[8] tax collection[9] and consortium bid purchasing.[10]

In 2012 Berks County Intermediate Unit had approximately 1300 employees.[11] In 2015 the Unit provided services to eighteen school districts in Berks County, as well as Berks Career and Technology Center, Reading Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center, and a number of non-public schools.

In 2017 BCIU hosted the annual Pennsylvania Governor's Competition in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.[12][13]
