Balakən (also, Balakän, Balakon, Belokan, and Belokany; Azerbaijani: Balakən; Avar: Билкан; Georgian: ბელაქანი) is a city and municipality in, and the capital of, the Balakan Rayon of Azerbaijan.
History
It was part of Kakheti-Heretian Kingdom and united Georgian Kingdom. Balakan was under occupation of Dagestanians and sefevid Iran. Between 1918-1921 it was part of Democratic Republic of Georgia. in 1921 balakan was becomed part of Azerbaijan SSR. In 1965, Balakən gained city status after Azerbaijani government's approval.[2]
Economy
The economy of Balakən is partially agricultural, partially tourist based, with some industries in operation.[2]

The demography of Balakan consist of mostly Avars, Azerbaijanis and Georgians (Ingiloys).
Cuisine
Balakən's signature cuisine includes maxara, cüttü, chicken chigirtma and Balakən halva.[2]
