Battelle for Kids (BFK) is a national not-for-profit organization committed to collaborating with school systems and communities to realize the power and promise of 21st century learning for every student.[1] The organization's team of educators alongside communications, technology, and business professionals innovates and partners with school districts to offer an educational experience that prepares all students to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to succeed in college, careers, and life. BFK's approach involves the entire school community—educators in partnership with students, parents, businesses, and others—to ensure sustainable impact in schools.[2]

About

Supported by an initial grant from Battelle Memorial Institute, Battelle for Kids was established in 2001 by the Ohio Business Roundtable to improve student achievement in Ohio under the leadership of former executive director Jim Mahoney. In 2005, Battelle for Kids became an independent, national not-for-profit organization focused on developing innovative services and solutions that empower and support teachers, leaders, and school systems to reach every learner. In December 2016, Dr. Karen Garza became the organization's new president and CEO.[3]

Today, Battelle for Kids collaborates with state departments of education, urban, suburban, and rural schools, and other education-focused organizations in more than 30 states.[4]

Innovation

A cornerstone of BFK's early work was the creation of SOAR, a group of 42 diverse Ohio school districts that came together to explore innovative practices for their schools. SOAR has been a model for showing how like-minded school systems can connect, collaborate, and innovate to improve learning. BFK is building on this legacy and evolving the SOAR Network in the 2017–2018 school year, as well as forming other networked improvement communities, to co-create new models of learning and lead the way for other school systems toward what works in a new era in education.[5]
