Barauni Thermal Power Station is an existing 320 megawatt coal-fired power station owned by Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB).[1] The power station is located at Begusarai district, Bihar, India.[2] Barauni thermal power station in Bihar came into existence in association with the Russian collaboration and came into operation in the year 1962.[3]

Capacity

Unit No. 1, 2 & 3 of 15MW units at the plant, which were commissioned in the early to mid-1960's have been decommissioned.[4]

Unit No. 4 & 5 of 50 MW each, which are Polish made, were shut down in 1995 and 1996 "due to pollution problem."[5] BSEB states that it proposed recommissioning the units but the Central Electricity Authority "declared revival/R&M of these units not Techno-economically viable." Thus these units stand retired.

Unit No. 6 which is supplied Bharat Heavy Electricals have under renovation & MODERNISATION BY bhel since November 2007. Unit No. 7 which too is supplied Bharat Heavy Electricals is undergoing renovation.[6] Commercial generation of 110 MW electricity started from Unit 7 on 4 November 2016.[7][8]

Two new units (2x250 MW) of the Barauni Thermal Power Station is expected to commence generation by April, 2017.[9]

Expansion plans

BSEB has proposed a 500 megawatt (MW) coal-fired expansion to the plant, comprising two 250MW units referred to as Barauni 8 & 9. It is proposed that the new units at the existing power station be commissioned by June 2014, with the second 250MW unit commissioned four months later. BSEB states that it seeking to source an additional 2.65 million tonnes a year from a Ministry of Coal allocation over either the Rajmahal coal field or Urma Pahari Tola..
