Predecessor | BMW 5 Series (E60) |
Successor | BMW 5 Series (G30) |
The BMW F10 is the sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series, which debuted in November 2009[9] as the successor to the E60 5 Series. The body styles of the range are:
- 4-door sedan/saloon (F10)
- 5-door estate/wagon (F11, branded as "Touring")
- 5-door hatchback (F07, branded as "Gran Turismo")
- 4-door long wheelbase sedan (F18, sold only in China, Mexico and the Middle East)
The F07 Gran Turismo is the first 5 Series to be available in a fastback body style. The F10 is also the first 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain, a turbocharged V8 engine, an 8-speed automatic transmission, a dual-clutch transmission (in the M5), active rear-wheel steering (called "Integral Active Steering"), electric power steering, double wishbone front suspension, an LCD instrument cluster (called "Black Panel Display") and automatic parking (called "Parking Assistant").[10]
In 2017, the F10 was replaced by the G30 5 Series.[11]
The F10 M5 is powered by the S63 twin-turbo V8 engine with a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. It is the first M5 to use a turbocharged engine.
Styling
The F10 uses a more traditional BMW exterior styling approach compared with the controversial styling of its E60 predecessor. [12] The "Bangle butt" is removed,[13] a Hofmeister kink is present,[14] a traditional kidney grill is used and crease lines are used on the bonnet (similar to the E39 and older 5 Series models).[15] Reviews of the styling have ranged from slightly bland, to handsome and muscular.[12][14][16][17][18]
The interior features an updated iDrive system[19] and a 13 mm (0.5 in) increase in rear knee-room for rear passengers.[14] The F10 saw the return of the centre console being angled towards the driver,[20][21] as used on the E39 and earlier generations of 5 Series.
Chassis and suspension
The F10 uses the same platform as the F01 7 Series.[22] Front suspension is double wishbones with double-pivot lower arms.[14] Rear suspension is a multi-link design with 5 links called "Integral V".[12]
Most suspension components are made from aluminium. The F30 uses a chassis from various grades of steel (unlike the aluminium front structure used by the E60), which is heavier but cheaper to produce and repair.[23] To reduce weight, the bonnet, front fenders and doors are made from aluminium.
The rear-wheel drive version of the 2011 535i has a rollover risk of 9.3%.[24]
Body styles
Sedan (F10)
The sedan was the first body style to be released. It was unveiled at the Munich Olympic Stadium in 2009.[25]
Touring (F11)
The Touring model was unveiled at the 2010 Leipzig Auto Show.[26]
- F10 sedan
- F11 touring
Gran Turismo (F07)
The 5 Series Gran Turismo is a 5-door fastback body style. It is longer and taller than the 5 Series sedan/Touring models, and has a hatchback rear door.[27] The hatchback has a dual-access opening and the side windows are frameless.[28][29]
Although sold as part of the 5 Series range, is is suggested that the Gran Turismo chassis has more in common with the F01 7 Series[30] and the fascia is more similar to the 7 Series than the 5 Series. The additional length results in more legroom for rear passengers.[31]
In some markets (such as the Canada and the United States), the Gran Turismo was launched before sedan and Touring models of the F10/F11 generation. Therefore, in these markets it was sold alongside the outgoing E60 5 Series until the release of the F10/F11 models.[32]
The F07 535i GT was the first model to use the N55 turbocharged straight-six engine, which replaced the N54.[33][34]
Long wheelbase sedan (F18)
A long wheelbase version of the BMW 5 Series Sedan was developed for the Chinese market, as a cheaper alternative to the 7 Series which is longer and wider. The wheelbase of the F18 is extended by 14 cm (5.5 in) over the standard 5 Series sedan.
The LWB 5 Series was assembled at BMW Plant Shenyang in Shenyang, China plant for the Chinese market.[35]
Models
Petrol engines
In Europe, the naturally aspirated six-cylinder models used the direct-injection N53 engine. However, many countries outside Europe continued to use the older N52 engine instead, due to high sulfur levels in the locally available petrol.

Predecessor | E60 M5 |
The F10 M5 was previewed by the BMW Concept M5, which was unveiled at Auto Shanghai in April 2011.[50] The production M5 was unveiled in 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show.[51]
It's powered by BMW's BMW N63TU biturbo 4.4 litre V8, an upgraded version of the unit found in the E70 X5 M and E71 X6 M. The compression ratio was raised and the pistons strengthened to cope with the added boost and compression. Equipped with higher lift camshafts and individual throttle bodies for added response, the engine has higher boost at 22 psi (1.5 bar) compared to the S63 unit found in the X5/X6M. Increasingly stringent international CO2 emissions and fuel consumption regulations are cited as the cause of death of the outgoing model's V10 engine, with the new S63TU engine cutting CO2 emissions by 25%. The engine produces 412 kW (560 PS; 553 bhp) and 680 N·m (500 lb·ft) of torque. The engine redlines at 7,200 rpm. Acceleration to 100 kilometres per hour (62 mph) is in 4.4 seconds,[52] and top speed is limited to 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph). This could be increased to 305 kilometres per hour (190 mph) if the M Driver's Package was selected.[53]
The Getrag SMG III single-clutch 7-speed semi-automatic transmission of the E60 M5 was replaced by a seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic.[54] This is paired with an Active M-Differential with torque vectoring between the rear wheels. In North America, the F10M was available with a 6-speed manual transmission, the only market to be offered this option.[55]
Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres are specified, on standard 19-inch multi-spoke or optional 20-inch split 5-spoke wheels.
The M5 also used an "Active Sound" system that plays a modified engine sound through the car's audio system.[56][57][58]
Alpina models
Alpina produced two variants of the F10/F11 5 Series, the B5 and D5. Both models received standard Alpina enhancements over the base BMW, including improvements to the engine, transmission, suspension and braking systems.
B5 Bi-Turbo
The B5 is based on the 550i. All iterations were fitted with Alpina-modified versions of BMW's N63 twin-turbo V8 engine. The original B5, which was unveiled at the 2010 Goodwoood Festival of Speed, produced 373 kW (500 hp) and 700 N·m (520 lb·ft). Alpina unveiled an updated B5 at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Power had been uprated to 397 kW (532 hp) and torque to 730 N·m (540 lb·ft). During 2015, Alpina sold the B5 Bi-Turbo Edition 50, which marked the company's 50th year in operation. This special edition featured a further enhanced engine which produced 441 kW (591 hp) and 800 N·m (590 lb·ft). The standard B5 received this same engine for the B5's last year of production, 2016.[59][60][61]
D5 Bi-Turbo
The D5 Bi-Turbo is based on the 535d. It received an Alpina-tuned version of BMW's N57 powerplant. It produced 257 kW (345 hp) and 700 N·m (520 lb·ft).[61]
Special models
530 Le
The 530 Le is a plug-in hybrid version of the long wheelbase 5 Series. It was unveiled at the 2014 Guangzhou Auto Show. It was powered by BMW's 160 kW (210 hp) N20 working in conjunction with an electric motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. In pure-electric mode the 530Le can reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h (75 mph) and has a maximum range of 58 km (36 mi). Combined fuel consumption is 2.1 litres/100 km.[62]
ActiveHybrid 5 (2011-)
The ActiveHybrid is a hybrid version of the 5 Series based on the 535i Sedan. It was previewed by the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.[63] The production ActiveHybrid 5 features a synchronous electric motor integrated into the housing of the automatic gearbox, saving space. The electric drive system develops 40 kW (54 hp) and 210 N·m (150 lb·ft) of torque available from rest. The motor is supplied with energy by a lithium-ion high-performance battery, likewise specially developed for the BMW ActiveHybrid 5. The high-voltage battery has its own cooling system and offers usable energy capacity of 675 Wh. The integration of the lithium-ion high-performance battery into the luggage area reduces the load capacity of the ActiveHybrid 5 to 375 litres, 145 litres lower than that of a standard 5 Series Sedan. Electric-only mode is active up to 60 km/h (37 mph). It also features "Hybrid Auto Start-Stop" function, coasting mode, and standard Driving Dynamics Control switch with ECO PRO mode, all designed to improve efficiency. BMW claims the ActiveHybrid 5 is capable of an electric-only range of 4 km (2.5 mi).[64]
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rated the 2013 model year ActiveHybrid 5 with a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp), with 23 mpg‑US (10 L/100 km; 28 mpg‑imp) in the city, and 30 mpg‑US (7.8 L/100 km; 36 mpg‑imp) in highway.[65]
M550d xDrive (2012-)
The M550d xDrive is a special high-performance variant of the F10/11 5 Series. Along with the X5 and X6 M50d, it launched the M Performance sub-brand. All three models were first unveiled at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show[66] The M550d is powered by BMW's N57S engine, a tri-turbocharged inline-6 diesel. This unit produces a maximum of 280 kW (380 hp) and 740 N·m (550 lb·ft), enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7s (Touring model: 4.9s). Available in both the sedan and Touring bodystyles, it is fitted exclusively with the ZF 8HP sport automatic transmission.[67]
Modifications were made to the suspension and damping, steering, brake system, suspension control systems and all-wheel drive to enhance the driving experience. Visual cues unique to M550d models include trapezoidal exhausts in dark chrome and both wing mirrors and air-intake bars in "ferric grey". Other 5 series models have wing mirrors in the same colour as the rest of the vehicle. The front fog lamps, standard on all other F10/F11 5 Series models are removed, to make space for additional air-intakes. The door-sill plates bear an "M550d" inscription.
