The Bhilai Institute of Technology (BIT) (Hindi: भिलाई प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान – दुर्ग) is a private engineering college located in Durg, Chhattisgarh, India. It is the first self-financed engineering college in Central India. Established in 1986, It is affiliated to Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University and approved by All India Council for Technical Education.
History
BIT-Durg was established in 1986, it was affiliated to Pandit Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur and started offering Bachelor of Engineering in four disciplines with an intake capacity of 180 students. In 2005, Institute get affiliated to newly formed Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Bhilai. The institution has since grown to an intake strength of 780, and now offers Bachelor of Engineering in seven disciplines, as well as postgraduate degrees, such as the Master of Computer Application and Master of Business Administration. It is one of the premier institutions in Central India and ranks among top 50 engineering institutions in India .
The Institute is managed by a Board of Trustees. The Trust creates a Governing Body consisting of its representatives, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of Chhattisgarh, Chhattisgarh Swami Vivekanand Technical University (CSVTU), industrialists, Senior Bureaucrats, Management Experts, and notable social workers.[1] All courses offered by the Institute are approved by the AICTE.
BIT is an institutional member of Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Institution of Engineers (IEI), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Institute of Steel Development and Growth (INSDAG), National Human Resource Development Network, and the American Information Resource Centre.
The Institute is a high-ranking university in India.[2]
Location
The institite is located at the threshold of Durg city beside NH-6 (GE Road) in Chhattisgarh, India. The whole establishment is spread over 62 hectare of land, in Bhilai House opposite to the Circuit house. Its proximity to Durg bus depot and Durg railway station facilitates fast commuting. Additionally, it is connected to each and every corner of Bhilai-Durg agglomeration through various means of transportation such as minibuses, auto rickshaw etc.
History
Commissioning of the Bhilai Steel Plant at Bhilai in 1959[3] necessitated having suitably trained and skilled personnel to perform specific technical tasks at the plant. Seeing this need, various organizations, industrialists, charitable institutions and philanthropic societies of the region took an initiative to establish an engineering institution, and to this end, a trust was formed and registered. The Government of Madhya Pradesh accorded the permission to open a self-supporting and self-financing engineering institute, and thus, in July 1986, the Bhilai Institute of Technology came into existence.
Seth Balkrishan was a philanthropist and a key founding member of BIT. His contribution in the fields of education, sports, social advancement, and the spiritual needs of the community are seen as legendary in Bhilai and the neighboring regions. The institute is therefore dedicated to him.

Energy and Environment Conservation Club
This club was formed in collaboration with CREDA (Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Authority), Government of Chhattisgarh. It is supported by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency of the Government of India through CREDA. It is in process of obtaining NGO status, thus making it the first students' club of an engineering institution in India to do so. It conducted Central India's first solar robot racing competition in 2009.
It organizes " Urja Utsav" which is the biggest technical and management festival in India to be organized by a students club. The club has its premises in the Mechanical Block. This club has its own quizzing team, cultural team and management team. The robotics club manages the technical requirements.
Robotics Club – VERVE
The robotics club is the only unofficial club of BIT. Managed fully by students, this club conducts annual workshops for first year and second year students in the field of manual and autonomous robotics. It conducts workshops at the Bhilai Institute of Technology (Durg and Raipur Campuses) and the Shankracharya Institute of Professional Management (Raipur). All technical events of BIT are managed by this club. Its students have won laurels in many technical festivals conducted all over India. Prominent wins were in Techkriti08 (IIT Kanpur), Techfest09 (IIT Bombay), Kshitij08&09 (IIT Kgp), Techniche09 (IIT Guhawati), Eclectika 09 (NIT Raipur), Axis08,09&10 (VNIT Nagpur) and Confluence10 (NIT Rourkela).
Some students of this club have won research scholarships from IIIT Hyderabad. The Green Regiment (Urja Utsav '10) conducted by this club had a participation of over 80 teams, making it the most successful robotics event in whole of Central India. It was the third event in India to get accredited by Tech4all Society, India and MetaWing (in collaboration with IIT Kgp).
