B.I.G (Hangul: 비아이지; also known as Boys In Groove), is a five member South Korean boy group formed by GH Entertainment in Seoul, South Korea. They debuted on July 9, 2014, with their first digital single "Hello".[1] The group celebrated their 200th day since debut by announcing their official fan club name Biginning.

History

Pre-debut

All five members of B.I.G were trainees before becoming members of the group and have an average of three years training between them. Three of the group's members: Gunmin, Minpyo and Heedo trained at the well known Plug In Music Academy.[2] Benji had been a student at Cleveland Institute of Music and Heifetz International Music Institute,[3] and later attended Juilliard School, before dropping out in 2011 to pursue a music career in South Korea.[4] He has been playing violin since he was four years of age and was a member of the Seattle Youth Symphony. Before joining GH Entertainment, Minpyo had been a Stardom Entertainment trainee and member of Underdogg (a sub-unit of Topp Dogg). Before debuting the members practiced together as a group for one and a half years. A representative from the agency stated that B.I.G are capable speakers of English, Japanese and Chinese, a fact that may help them build a global fanbase.

On June 25, 2014, a short intro video introducing the boys and showing off their dance skills was uploaded on GH Entertainment’s official YouTube channel.[5] This video was followed by teasers showcasing the members' individual talents, including, two violin performances from Benji, J-Hoon's dance performance, and another dance performance from Gunmin.[6] Individual member teaser images were released to the public from June 30 to July 1,[7] along with the official group teaser image on July 3.[8]

2014: Debut with "Hello" and "Are You Ready?"

On July 4, the music video teaser for B.I.G's debut single, "Hello", was published.[9] On July 5, just days before B.I.G's debut, the group took to the streets of Myeongdong to perform.[10] The official music video for B.I.G's debut single, "Hello", and accompanying single album were released on July 9, with distribution from LOEN Entertainment.[11] The song was written, composed and arranged by Shim Man-joo, D'zell,[12] and namely Play Kid who has worked with the likes of Kara, Apink, Girl's Day and U-Kiss.[13] The song immediately gained popularity because of its high praising lyrics in regards to South Korea which highlight the culture and promote the country.[14] The group performed their debut stage on SBS MTV's The Show on the day of their debut. In the performance they showcased the choreography for their instrumental intro and finished with their single, "Hello".

On October 16, B.I.G confirmed their upcoming second single, "Are You Ready?"'s release date.[15] A teaser video and group teasers images were released on the same day.[16] The official music video and accompanying single album were released on October 21.[17] This single was produced by Sintto, PETERPAN, Krazy Sound and Park Hyun-joong of Brave Sound, who is well known for the creation of Sistar’s hit song "Alone".[18] The group began promotions from October 22, with the first performance being on MBC Music's Show Champion.[19] Similar to B.I.G's debut street performance, the group held unique promotional guerrilla performances in Myeongdong, Hongdae and Idae on October 31, to perform their new single along with their debut track and covers from famous idols, such as Taeyang and G-Dragon.[20]

On December 12, B.I.G released their rendition of Wham!'s "Last Christmas" to thank their fans and celebrate their first Christmas as a group.[21]

2015: "Between Night n Music" and "Taola"

To celebrate B.I.G's 200 days since debut, the group announced their official fanclub name, "Biginning" (Hangul: 비기닝), this was chosen as a combination of the name of the group and a play on the word 'beginning'.[22]

B.I.G announced their third single, "Between Night n Music", on March 3, accompanied by a selection of individual and group teasers images.[23] A teaser video was uploaded to GH Entertainment and 1theK's Youtube channels a day later.[24] The new single album and accompanying music video were released on March 6, with promotions beginning a week later on Arirang TV’s Simply K-Pop.[25]

B.I.G held their first fan meeting, "Hello Biginning", on July 31 in Seoul.[26]

On November 4, B.I.G's official Youtube channel published an audio teaser for an upcoming mini album, letting fans know they would be joining the long list of November comebacks.[27] They released a music video teaser for their fourth single, "Taola", on November 15, revealing a new image and announcing that "this is a new chapter".[28] The music video for "Taola" was released on November 17, with distribution changed from Loen Entertainment to CJ E&M. The accompanying single album entitled "Big Transformer" was released on November 19. The music video was directed by Digipedi's Seong Won-mo and Park Sang-woo, who have also worked with big artists including: Shinee, Big Bang and Infinite.[29] The group began promotions on SBS MTV's The Show on the same day.[30] The single album featuring both the title track and a new song, "Big Transformer", was officially released two days later on November 19, with both songs being produced by Marco.[31]

2016: Japanese debut and Aphrodite

GH Entertainment confirmed in late January that B.I.G were preparing for their upcoming Japanese debut, with management from HY Entertainment and distribution from Universal Music Japan.[32] The group began promoting in Japan by holding showcases in Tokyo before and after their debut to help them become known.[33] They officially debuted on March 23, with the Japanese version of "Taola", which peaked at number 15 on the Oricon chart.[34]

On May 10, B.I.G announced that their first mini-album, Aphrodite, would be released later that month.[35] They began revealing teasers leading up to the big release, with a track list reveal, image teasers being publisher daily to social media and a music video teaser on May 13.[36] The mini-album and accompanying music video for title track of the same name, were both released on May 17.[37] The music video was directed by Lee Jung-won who has also worked with artists such as: K.Will, Sistar's Hyolyn, Yoo Seung-woo and San E. All tracks on the album were written, composed and arranged by Marco, with additional lyricists Kuan on "Can You Hear Me?", and J'Kyun of Lucky J on "Aphrodite".[38] Promotions for the album began on release day with a showcase on SBS MTV's The Show.

B.I.G held their first Japanese concerts on June 17 and 18 at Harajuku's Astro Hall in Tokyo.[39] Prior to B.I.G's debut in Japan, one of GH Entertainment's staff reported that "News of B.I.G's Japan debut and live performances have been spreading across the world, and as a result, requests to perform in other countries are overflowing".[40] In response to this B.I.G held their first showcase in Malaysia from July 23 to 24 at Summit Subang USJ and Berjaya Times Square.[41]

2017: "1.2.3" and "Hello Hello"

On February 3, 2017, B.I.G announced their return with the fifth single album, "1.2.3".[42] The group will promote the single without rapper Minpyo, who is taking a break due to health problems.[43] The music video teaser was released a day later showcasing a more retro style, described as B.I.G's 'rebirth'.[44] They began promoting the new single on music shows from February 7 onwards with their first appearance being on SBS MTV's The Show.[45] The music video was released on February 13.[46]

On May 15, B.I.G announced their sixth single album, "Hello Hello", would be released of May 23.[47] B.I.G held their first concert in South Korea entitled B.I.G Asia Tour in Seoul, on June 24, at the KBS Arena in Seoul.[48] On July 5, B.I.G introduced a campaign song entitled "Remember", they released the digital single on July 7.[49]
