Augustin Augier

François Augustin Marie Augier de Favas, also known as Augustin Augier, was born on 15 December 1758 in Saint-Tropez (France, Var). He was a French teacher and botanist. Ordained a priest on the 22 May 1789, he was a fellow of the Oratorian order. He taught mostly in the Collège Royal de Tournon (1784-1795?) and in small boarding schools he ran near Saint-Donat-sur-l'Herbasse (France, Drôme). He died in Peyrins (France, Drôme) on 29 January 1825.

His most famous publication, his "Essai d'une nouvelle classification des végétaux", published in 1801, included a diagram entitled "l'Arbre Botanique" (the botanical tree). This was repeatedly reported as one of the first evolutionary trees. Unknown by most botany historians, he was several times erroneously designated as "an obscure botanist from Lyon".

He also published about teaching, and in particular the teaching of Latin.
